About the Author

Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in biology from Harvard University (where she was initially a philosophy major), an M.S. in microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). During her 12 years as an editor at Benjamin Cummings, she played a major role in a number of successful textbooks. She is lead author of Campbell Biology and co-author of Campbell Essential Biology and Campbell Essential Biology with Physiology .

Martha R. Taylor has been teaching biology for over 35 years. She earned her B.A. in biology from Gettysburg College and her M.S. and Ph.D. in science education from Cornell University. She was assistant director of the Office of Instructional Support at Cornell for seven years. She has taught introductory biology for both majors and non-majors at Cornell University and is currently a lecturer in the Learning Strategies Center teaching supplemental biology courses. Based on her experiences working with students in classrooms, laboratories, and tutorials, Dr. Taylor is committed to helping students create their own knowledge of and appreciation for biology. She has been the author of the Student Study Guide for all nine editions of Campbell Biology .

Eric J. Simon is an associate professor in the Department of Biology and Health Science at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to science majors and non-science majors, as well as upper-level courses in genetics, microbiology, tropical marine biology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly for non-science majors. Dr. Simon is the lead author of Campbell Essential Biology and Campbell Essential Biology with Physiology .

Jean L. Dickey is a professor of biology at Clemson University. She had no idea that science was interesting until her senior year in high school, when a scheduling problem landed her in an advanced biology course. Abandoning plans to study English or foreign languages, she enrolled in Kent State University as a biology major. After receiving her B.S. in biology, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Purdue University. Since joining the faculty at Clemson in 1984, Dr. Dickey has specialized in teaching non-science majors, including a course designed for pre-service elementary teachers and workshops for in-service teachers. She also developed an investigative laboratory curriculum for general biology. Dr. Dickey is author of Laboratory Investigations for Biology and co-author of Campbell Essential Biology and Campbell Essential Biology with Physiology .

1 year edition cycle?

This 7th edition was released only 1 year after the 6th edition. If you are a professor do you students a kindness and select a text published by a less greedy publisher. It is obvious the only reason for such a quick edition cycle is to eliminate the secondary market and force students to pay the full new price every year.

Pearson = Oligopoly

I have a bit of a problem with Campbell. Like Pearson, Campbell prints texts and then changes the edition every year in order to keep selling books at inflated, publishers' prices instead of allowing students the chance to turn in used copies. Talk about a oligopoly system. Used copies lose value after a year (or a semester) depending on when Pearson decides to switch editions. One professor specifically stated that the only changes Campbell makes within the different editions are the photographs.

Do yourself a favor and purchase an older edition, and the online lab key separately. The book is also not great in terms of provided information. I'm a pre-med student nearing graduation. I found this book to be about as basic as most beginning high school biology books. Make SURE you attend lectures if your assigned this book you'll be missing a crucial abundance otherwise.

On another note, since I noticed a couple of people found this review non-helpful, biology texts are virtually unchanging. Yes, data sets and new research are continually changing and new information available, but for the most part, these basic level books don't change by much given the solid nature of the basic sciences. Where higher sciences are concerned, I select the newer text editions. Where basics are concerned, the information hasn't changed in hundreds of years (ex.Mendel's Laws, Germ Theory, Redox etc.). We are taught that we should ALWAYS question science, and anything we are learning, but in that same regard, shouldn't we also question a slimming wallet/pocketbook?

Fellow Students: Do yourself one more favor! If you're going to buy a NEW textbook, buy it from AMAZON and get a Prime account. It is WELL worth the money.

Online access code not included

Was extremely disappointed after I received my rented textbook and realized that (I thought) they forgot to include my online Mastering Biology access code. I spoke with someone from Amazon and he told me that when renting the textbook, they do not include the online code. This is quite a blow for me as I'm a "poor college student" and thought that I was getting a great deal. Now, I'll be returning the textbook and I won't get my $77.88 back until they receive/process my return, which now holds me up from buying the book and code from Amazon or elsewhere. Amazon needs to clearly state that when renting, nothing extra is included with the book. They also need to change the receipt they send with your textbook, as mine stated I was supposed to receive an online code.

Second Edition is Even Better!

A great update to the first edition, which was a classic. This belongs in the reference library of every web and user experience designer. Although Dan Brown clearly wrote this with web designers from the IA/UX persuasion in mind, there's guidance throughout that can be leveraged by those from other design and creative disciplines that need to communicate their work to various audiences.

For me, that's the secret sauce that makes this book so valuable. Besides the excellent information (and more illustrations) on structure and tools for creating effective communications, it provides guidance on when and how to frame and use different types of communications (deliverables or diagrams) to facilitate discussions, work with stakeholders, clients, and other contributors, and enable projects to move forward. If you work with clients or stakeholders (what designer doesn't?), this book will help you be more successful.

Good content lost in poor style

As some other reviewers have pointed out this book is best suited to those who are interested in managing the project as well as actually doing the design job. I can see how from his perspective this book does not agree with some designers, who care very little about how to set-up meetings to discuss design deliverables, and just want get their primary job done. However, as a product manager, I found this part interesting.
What is really bothering me is the style of the author's writing. Overcomplicated long phrasings mixed with out-of-place comments (or are those jokes?) about author's hobbies... sometimes I feel I am reading a blog not a book, it's a waste of time.
I would suggest that for the 3rd edition the author teams up with a good editor who would help him phrase his thoughts more laconically, and remove all the noise from the book. Until then, if you are considering buying this book, I suggest you keep looking (unless you have lots of free time).

Beautiful in all ways!

OK, I'm biased, but I love this book. Dan did such a great job creating a book that you actually WANT to come back to time and again. If you're like me, you probably have lots of books on your shelf, and they look nice up there, but you may not take them down and actually use them very much. This book might not look as nice on your shelf, because you'll use it so much that it will get beat up. Which is a good thing.

This is the book I wish I had when I was learning to model. It’s a practical, easy-to-follow guide on what it takes to work as a 3D artist. I can’t recommend it enough! Digital Modeling deserves a place on the desk of every serious 3D artist.

As an artist and educator, I have a short list of trade books that I recommend whenever the opportunity arises. Digital Modeling by William Vaughan is at the top of that list. It is without question the finest expose on the art 3D modeling that has ever been written.

About the Author

Award-winning artist, writer, and director William Vaughan is currently the creative director and co-owner of Applehead Factory Design Studio (www.appleheadfactory.com). He has worked for NewTek as its LightWave Evangelist, training CGI artists throughout the world and authoring more than 300 tutorials and instructional videos. William was Director of Industry Relations and Head of Curriculum at the Digital Animation and Visual Effects School at Universal Studios in Florida. He has been published by every major CGI magazine, contributed to 17 books, has written and directed several award-winning films, and has created digital models for many top studios including Pixar Animation Studios.

The most in depth guide to modeling I've seen

As an industry professional working on visual effects for TV and film, I am always looking to sharpen my skills. Although I can model, it has always been one of the weaker points in my skill set. When I found out that William 'Proton' Vaughan had written a book on the topic, I immediately bought a copy. William's two passions are modeling and teaching, and he always gives 100% to any project he works on. I knew I would be getting an easy to understand, comprehensive guide to modeling. I was not disappointed.

The title of the book Digital Modeling is a very modest description of the wealth of information it contains. It has everything you need to know about models: the basic components, types (poly, NURBS, Sub-D), hard surface & organic, photoreal, stylized, etc. What it also explains is the very core of creating a digital model: problem solving. Models involve much more than just pushing points around in virtual space. William details problem solving not only in the construction of the model, but also for understanding how your model will be used within the project. There are a variety of factors that should spark questions that will help influence how you build your model. Is it for animation? Will it need to be deformed in a special way? Is it for hi-res print? Is it a game model? Will it be a 3D print? Is it a combination of these things? William explains how each of these factors affect your approach to creating your model.

Given all of that, there are still over 100 pages of information regarding a modeler's role in the production pipeline. It covers pre-production, production, and post-production. Several industry professionals, from modelers to renderers, give in-depth perspective about how good models fit in with what they do. There is also a chapter dedicated to helping you find a job as a professional modeler. I've seen several modeling books created by skilled artists, but I've never seen one that covers as much material as this one.

Great reference and great read!

As a professional video editor, my job is to tell real stories about real people and make them clear, concise, and visually compelling for the viewer. So when I got my first 3D modeling and animation software a few years ago, I immediately recognized the value such a tool would have in making my job as a visual storyteller easier.

Unfortunately, having no art background, I had to begin teaching myself 3D graphics and art. Fortunately, I found and started using William Vaughan's excellent series of video tutorials (on the web) and began doing simple motion graphics within just a few days!

Vaughan has always had a clear, easy to follow conversational style that makes his tutorials both highly informative and viewable. So when I found out he was writing a book on digital modeling, it was a "must have, must read" moment for me. The book is fully color illustrated, and written in the same, clear, direct, easy to follow conversational style used in his videos.

Finally, because of the tips presented in this book, I am doing some of the best modeling work I have ever done. If you are, or know, an aspiring 3D artist, this book is a "must have" for you (or them), too!

Sets a new industry standard for aspiring digital artists

Although "Proton" is best known for Lightwave, don't be fooled into thinking this book won't help you with Maya, 3Ds Max, Photoshop, and every other tool in your kit! I'm the CTO at Shader Joe's animation studio, and we use all the tools every day. Because of this, I was very skeptical that even the Proton could write a book that was platform independent. I was wrong! Whether you are just starting your career as a digital artist, developer, producer or programmer, or are an old 20+ years fossil like me, this book will change a lot of what you thought about modeling, gaming, film, animation and the entire tradigital industry.

I've found over the years that a lot of young artists come into the field with brilliant sketchbooks, and the first time they encounter unfolding a UV map, they freak out and leave the industry! Let's be brutally honest: programs like Poser, Maya, Lightwave, Blender, etc. can take a lifetime to learn: not just the program, but a single plugin! Specialization, for better or worse (Darwin said the price of specialization is death), is the way the industry works now. On the positive side, if you become an expert in only one small area (example: Blastcode for Maya), you can be the worldwide "go to" person in that niche and make a great, fun living!

This book is REALLY up to date! Even the "2013" titled bibles don't cover the real world of CGI as well as this book. It's a true career booster, and it is clear that in every sentence Proton's "agenda" is to help the reader's career with inspiration and encouragement. What about the technical side? If this book tried to go through everything it covers in depth (Beziers, NURBS, Polygons, Rigging, those infamous UVs...) it would be 4,000 pages. Instead, Proton gives a THOROUGH CONTEXT for each technology, showing you what works where and why. For more details, you can then reference his own and his recommended tutorials! Example: you have a character you need to create for both a movie and a later appearance in a Unity game. Do you use Maya plus After Effects, Lightwave, Blender, Poser... and what about the web... Flash, PHP, Java??? Where do old fashioned drawing and time tested techniques like Matte Painting fit in? You'll now GET all this!

If you only buy one book this year on digital art, and there are many good ones out there, THIS IS THE ONE you should get first! It will put everything else in context, and bring you up to speed on how the best and brightest do things right now. If you've ever seen Proton's tutorials, there is one other positive: he is one of the sweetest guys you'll ever meet-- the "teacher's teacher" and the kind of educator we'd like to send all our kids and grandkids to! Well worth the investment, you'll go back to this book for years to come.

A unique book for Illustrator users

It's practical because it demonstrates how to use all the new CS5 features and how to "think in Illustrator". It's inspirational because it shows artwork from dozens of top Illustrator artists and explains how they were made. It's also packed with real-world tips as well as a DVD containing plug-ins, brushes and symbols, graphic styles for text, Illustrator files for many of the illustrations, and extra tips. We recommend this book very highly."

Excellent, hands-on book

I got this book as an advanced tutorial for Illustrator CS5, explaining the new features by using practical exercises.

I have limited time and don't enjoy books that have little benefit over the online manual of the Adobe applications, especially if they delve into tedious and boring step-by-step descriptions such as "press key A, now press key B, etc.". This book takes a refreshingly different approach in that each chapter first explains the nuts and bolts of a certain feature, then continues to exemplify it with practical examples of professional Illustrator artists, but at a very detailed level and with the actual files on the enclosed DVD. Thus, it is not only a tutorial, but also a portfolio of stellar works that will inspire any AI user.

I had a look at various other Illustrator CS5 books, and this one was the best I found. Can't fault it in any way and wish the authors many happy returns. Highly recommended for any intermediate Illustrator user looking for inspiration.

The must-have book for a more advanced Illustrator user.

Very well written and fast-paced book, created presumedly for advanced users that already know their way around Illustrator, written to teach the more advanced techniques of Illustrator. I've owned all versions of this book since "The Illustrator 8 WOW Book!" and also used Illustrator for 8 years before buying the first copy. Each revision adds on new techniques that apply to the newly-introduced features of Illustrator while retaining some of the more useful tutorials that still apply.

Bottom line: I used Illustrator daily for around 8 years before buying the very first book (purchased used) that I bought and it increased my skill level considerably. That's not an exaggeration, nearly 10 years experience at the time and this book taught me a lot. It's now nearly 10 years later and I continue to buy these books because they are the only book I've found that guarantees I will make money from the knowledge that I learn from it; if not by skill itself, but by the time saved by being more productive.

If you think you know everything about Illustrator, like I did, buy this book and you will thank me for it. I thought I was as good as it gets at the time. In hindsight, I can easily estimate that I am *at least* 4-times better at Illustrator because I bought these books. If you think you know Illustrator, it's time that you buy this book to prove yourself wrong. And besides, it'll pay for itself.

(PS. On a side note, I believe I've rated and reviewed all of the series of these books, that's how much I love this series. I not only believe this is the only book with advanced techniques, but firmly believe it should be purchased by every single person that uses Illustrator with more than 5 years experience.)

This Book clearly explains all aspects of the solar system chapter by chapter. It is easy to read (not overly scientific), yet very informative. It is a great resource. It is a complete guide to the solar system!

Got this for my Astronomy class and I must say I thought this class was going to be a joke - took it for the requirement credits BUT I must say this book made astronomy pretty fun and I actually enjoy learning about our solar system!

The book was shipped to me really quickly, but its quality is not good as advertised. The bad quality makes me disappointed about the sellers. However, it is still not so bad that I couldn't read it. Cheap price, cheap quality.

About the Author
Cathy Pons grew up hearing French spoken by her grandparents but only began study of the language in high school. After completing a BA in French at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, she spent a year in France as a Fulbright Teaching Assistant. Pons completed her doctorate in French linguistics at Indiana University where, as an Assistant Professor, she directed the elementary French program and the MA in French instruction. Pons served on the faculty of several AATF Summer Institutes and on the Executive Board of the Indiana chapter of AATF. Teaching at the University of North Carolina at Asheville since 1995, Pons is Associate Professor in the Department of Foreign Languages. She is past president of the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina and has received numerous grants in support of study abroad programs for students and faculty. With more than twenty-five years' experience in elementary French teaching and teacher preparation, Pons finds the classroom to be a stimulating environment. Mary Ellen Scullen has been enamored of French from her first exposure in the seventh grade. After completing her BA in French at Kalamazoo College in Michigan, she went to Tours, France to be a French government sponsored teaching assistant for one year. Three years later, Scullen returned to the US with a "Licence de Lettres modernes, mention Francais Language Etrangere" and a "Maitrise de Francais Langue Etrangere "from "Universite Francois Rabelais" in Tours. After teaching at Kalamazoo College for a year, Scullen went to Indiana University where she earned a joint PhD in French Linguistics and Theoretical Linguistics in 1993. Scullen has taught French language, culture, and linguistics, coordinated the basic French language program, and supervised teaching assistants at the University of Louisville and since 1998 at the University of Maryland, College Park. She also had the opportunity to teach French in Southern Africa at the University of Malawi from 1995-1997 and to serve as the Resident Director for the Maryland-in-Nice program in Nice, France from 2002-2003. For the past several years, Scullen has been involved in training new teaching assistants not only in French, but also in Spanish, German, Russian and Japanese. She finds working with new teaching assistants to be highly rewarding, if not occasionally frustrating, and she truly loves being in the classroom with first-year students. A native of France, Albert Valdman earned his B.A. in Romance Languages at the University of Pennsylvania and his Ph.D. in French linguistics at Cornell University. Currently a Rudy Professor of French & Italian and Linguistics and Director of the Creole Institute at Indiana University, Valdman has taught French and linguistics at Indiana University since 1960. He has served as chair of the Department of Linguistics, Chair of the Committee for Research and Development in Language Instruction, Director of the graduate program in French Linguistics, and Director of French Language Instruction. Valdman has written and researched in a broad range of fields of linguistics, on issues in second language learning, and on the French language. He is a leading specialist of Creole languages related to French and was named Commandeur dans l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques by the French government for his contributions to French studies. He is the founder and currenteditor-in-chief of the journal, Studies in Second Language Acquisition, and is past president of the American Association of Teachers of French.

Albert Valdman is Rudy Professor of French, Italian, and Linguistics (emeritus) and the director of the Creole Institute at Indiana University. He is also the editor of the "Haitian CreoleaEnglish Bilingual Dictionary".

About the Author
John McMurry, educated at Harvard and Columbia, has taught approximately 17,000 students in general and organic chemistry over a 30-year period. A Professor of Chemistry at Cornell University since 1980, Dr. McMurry previously spent 13 years on the faculty at the University of California at Santa Cruz. He has received numerous awards, including the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship (1969–71), the National Institute of Health Career Development Award (1975–80), the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award (1986–87), and the Max Planck Research Award (1991).

David S. Ballantine received his B.S. in Chemistry in 1977 from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, and his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1983 from the University of Maryland at College Park. After several years as a researcher at the Naval Research Labs in Washington, DC, he joined the faculty in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of Northern Illinois University, where he has been a professor since 1989. He was awarded the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award in 1998 and has been departmental Director of Undergraduate Studies since 2008. In addition, he is the coordinator for the Introductory and General Chemistry programs, and is responsible for supervision of the laboratory teaching assistants.

Carl A. Hoeger received his B.S. in Chemistry from San Diego State University and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1983. After a postdoctoral stint at the University of California, Riverside, he joined the Peptide Biology Laboratory at the Salk Institute in 1985 where he ran the NIH Peptide Facility while doing basic research in the development of peptide agonists and antagonists. During this time he also taught general, organic, and biochemistry at San Diego City College, Palomar College, and Miramar College. He joined the teaching faculty at University of California, San Diego in 1998. Dr. Hoeger has been teaching chemistry to undergraduates for over 20 years, where he continues to explore the use of technology in the classroom; his current project involves the use of video podcasts as adjuncts to live lectures. In 2004 he won the Paul and Barbara Saltman Distinguished Teaching Award from UCSD. He is deeply involved with the General Chemistry program at UCSD, and also shares partial responsibility for the training and guidance of teaching assistants in the Chemistry and Biochemistry departments.

Virginia E. Peterson received her B.S. in Chemistry in 1967 from the University of Washington in Seattle, and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1980 from the University of Maryland at College Park. Between her undergraduate and graduate years she worked in lipid, diabetes, and heart disease research at Stanford University. Following her Ph.D. she took a position in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Missouri in Columbia and is now Professor Emerita. When she retired in2011 she had been the Director of Undergraduate Advising for the department for 8 years and had taught both senior capstone classes and biochemistry classes for nonscience majors. Although retired Dr. Peterson continues to advise undergraduates and teach classes. Awards include both the college level and the university-wide Excellence in Teaching Award and, in 2006, the University’s Outstanding Advisor Award and the State of Missouri Outstanding University Advisor Award. Dr. Peterson believes in public service and in 2003 received the Silver Beaver Award for service from the Boy Scouts of America.

Mediocre Text

I had to purchase this book specifically for a college chemistry class (required the Mastering Chemistry Online component too). Having used another chemistry book several years before, I was preloaded with knowledge that made me realize how thin this text is compared to others. Much of the content is oversimplified where details are needed. Worst is the number of syntax errors in the chemical equations. Superscript numbers and mismatched charges. These simple editorial mistakes add a tremendous amount of confusion to an entry level chemistry student. Many of my peers spent much time scratching their heads rather than quickly absorbing content and moving forward. If you're thinking about purchasing this text for your own benefit (self-paced learning) skip it and pick up Introduction to General, Organic, & Biochemistry by Bettelheim, et al. If you must use this text for a class, I recommend picking up a second chemistry book to cross-reference. This book does have some strengths (great pictures, lots of good work problems at the end of each chapter, and plenty side-note information that ties the material to real world/healthcare related matters. The errors, however, make it so I can't recommend it to an entry-level chemistry student.

I really enjoy this text because of the organization, the simplification, and the way it uses illustrations to demonstrate important principles. I'm in Organic Chemistry now and also used the same text for inorganic chemistry last term. The only element of the text that is not helpful is all the errors. But, my professor gives us extra credit for finding the errors. So, I suppose it all works out in my favor. Sometimes the errors are typos and other times they're completely off-track. The "Selected Answers" book for the 7th edition is also error ridden. At times it gives you answers to questions that do not correspond to this edition, which is not helpful. But I do recommend purchasing the selected answers manual. It has helped me 90% of the time understand a problem due to the extended work shown or explain to a classmate how a problem is carried-out. Good luck, and have fun!

It was my text book

It was the assigned textbook for my Physics course. However, that doesn't refute the fact this book is great. It is easy to understand, to follow, and to practice physics with. I like the book very much. But still it is a textbook which means there are so many problems to solve and practice with, meaning that it will be boring for people who purchase it for self study :P.
