"New and experienced Android Engineers will learn to make their applications more extensive and polished through reading this book. The best part is that it is filled with top quality code samples that can not be found through any search of the internet. About the Author
Lauren Darcey is responsible for the technical leadership and direction of a small software company specializing in mobile technologies, including Android, iPhone, Blackberry, Palm Pre,BREW, and J2ME and consulting services. With more than two decades of experience in professional software production, Lauren is a recognized authority in application architecture and the development of commercial-grade mobile applications. Lauren received a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
She spends her copious free time traveling the world with her geeky mobile-minded husband and is an avid nature photographer. Her work has been published in books and newspapers around the world. In South Africa, she dove with 4-meter-long great white sharks and got stuck between a herd of rampaging hippopotami and an irritated bull elephant. She’s been attacked by monkeys in Japan, gotten stuck in a ravine with two hungry lions in Kenya, gotten thirsty in Egypt, narrowly avoided a coup d’état in Thailand, geocached her way through the Swiss Alps, drank her way through the beer halls of Germany, slept in the crumbling castles of Europe, and gotten her tongue stuck to an iceberg in Iceland (while being watched by a herd of suspicious wild reindeer).
Shane Conder has extensive development experience and has focused his attention on mobile and embedded development for the past decade. He has designed and developed many commercial applications for Android, iPhone,BREW, Blackberry, J2ME, Palm, and Windows Mobile—some of which have been installed on millions of phones worldwide. Shane has written extensively about the mobile industry and evaluated mobile development platforms on his tech blogs and is well known within the blogosphere. Shane received a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of California.
A self-admitted gadget freak, Shane always has the latest phone, laptop, or other mobile device. He can often be found fiddling with the latest technologies, such as cloud services and mobile platforms, and other exciting, state-of-the-art technologies that activate the creative part of his brain. He also enjoys traveling the world with his geeky wife, even if she did make him dive with 4-meter-long great white sharks and almost get eaten by a lion in Kenya. He admits that he has to take at least two phones with him when backpacking—even though there is no coverage—that he snickered and whipped out his Android phone to take a picture when Laurie got her tongue stuck to that iceberg in Iceland, and that he is catching on that he should be writing his own bio.

Used for teaching Android course to CS majors
By Frank McCown
I used this book for teaching an upper-level computer science course on Android application development. I've read through a number of books on Android, and I found this be one of books that best compliments my teaching style.
I required my students to read about 2/3 of the book, and I required them to complete online quizzes that I developed for each chapter. At the end of the course, I had them complete a survey about the book, and here's the results:
1) The book was very helpful in learning how to program Android apps.
a. 0% Strongly Disagree
b. 12% Somewhat Disagree
c. 6% Neutral
d. 59% Somewhat Agree
e. 24% Strongly Agree
2) I referred to the book often when developing my project.
a. 6% Strongly Disagree
b. 18% Somewhat Disagree
c. 29% Neutral
d. 35% Somewhat Agree
e. 12% Strongly Agree
3) I would recommend this book to others who want to learn how to program Android apps.
a. 0% Strongly Disagree
b. 12% Somewhat Disagree
c. 24% Neutral
d. 24% Somewhat Agree
e. 41% Strongly Agree
To summarize, 83% thought the book was helpful in learning how to program Android apps, and 65% of the class is likely to recommend this book to others. That's not bad considering how critical most college students are of their text books.
Of course my students also received instruction from me, so it's difficult to know what their opinion of the book would be if it was the sole source of info on Android programming available to them. For me as an instructor, the book was quite helpful in learning new bits of Android that I was previously unfamiliar with.

Many code examples but lacking background information
By Ralph Mueller
This books list many code examples, but it lacks in explanation. The examples are good for understanding what is possible in Android. The beginning the book has a good introduction chapter that can get you started in Android programming. But then it goes on wasting a lot of space with xml and code listings and not focusing on explaining the essentials. It is not a bad book but i miss a little more information on how to put everything together into a real working application. There is a chapter on best practices but it only gives very general information.
Before buying the book you might just download the examples from the book website first.

Many examples and well structured.
By Prasanna Kumar Ram Kumar
A good book for some who wants to get started on Andriod mobile development. The book has a lot of examples. The first few chapters has a a lot of information on how to get started with Android Development. The chapters in the book are small focusing on a concept of Andriod development, which makes it easy to read. The authors starts off with a simple application, also covers UI, UI with Animation, using the Andriond API (which also covers the Location Based Service API), Data, Data Storage and Security Which is pretty comprehensive.
The Apendix has some good content like a quick start guide to the Android Emulator and the Eclipse IDE.
