5/14: If you are working with the Finite Mathematics book authored by Margaret Lial, Raymond Greenwell, and Nathan Ritchey, then you are better served by the solutions manual. The solutions for all odd problems are very clear, detailed, thorough, and well-explained. The reader just can't ask for anything better than this. Many times, you will find the practice problems to be pretty simple enough that you will want to check if the answers match; sometimes, you might find it incorrect and be somewhat stumped, but the explanations in the solutions manual always prevail through the difficulty of the problem. As a bonus, if you want to get the solutions manual for even problems, the pdf file can be easily found online with a bit of googling. All in all, Student's Solutions Manual for Finite Mathematics makes learning from the book and working with these problems painless and a fun journey to be much appreciated.

A great book covering everything

This textbook is one of the best scientific books I have seen. Not only does it cover earth science (like geology), but astronomy and meteorology also. It covers every topic that you possibly want to know about. The authors leave no information out. I had to use this for Science Olympiad, and it helped me so much. The explanations are great, the images beautiful, and the diagrams very helpful. I would suggest this for anyone that has an interest in Earth Science or Meteorology. It is a great book.

If you are planning to use this as a homeschool ...

If you are planning to use this as a homeschool reference this isn't the book for you. There is no end of chapter questions, just a bunch of vocabulary before moving on to the next chapter. The book is affiliated with the Mastering Geography website that supposedly helps in the learning process but the book does not come with the code for it and must be purchased separately. This costs even more money. I am still using the book, but I feel, with either access to the website or a workbook (not the lab book), the chapters would be more understandable and I could be assured that my homeschooler is actually grasping the concepts.

About the Author
Judy Goodenough
Judy received her B.S. from Wagner College (Staten Island, NY), and her doctorate from New York University. She has 30 years of teaching experience at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, specializing in introductory level courses. The insights into student concerns and problems–gained from more than 25 years of teaching Human Biology and 20 years of team-teaching The Biology of Social Issues–have helped shape this book. In 1986, Judy was honored with a “Distinguished Teaching Award.” In addition to teaching, she has written articles in peer-reviewed journals, contributed chapters to several introductory biology texts, and written numerous laboratory manuals. With the author team of McGuire and Jakob, she is preparing Perspectives on Animal Behavior.

Betty McGuire
Betty received her B.S. in Biology from Pennsylvania State University, where she also played varsity basketball. She went on to receive an M.S. and Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and then spent two years as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. Her field and laboratory research emphasize the social behavior and reproduction of small mammals. She has published numerous research papers, co-authored the text Perspectives on Animal Behavior as well as several introductory biology study guides, and served as an Associate Editor for Mammalian Species, a publication of the American Society of Mammalogists. Betty taught Human Biology, Introductory Biology, Vertebrate Biology, and Animal Behavior at Smith College. She now teaches Mammalogy and The Vertebrates: Structure, Function, and Evolution at Cornell University.

This book is for my biology class but it is also teaching a lot of new things. Like most of us, I have taken biology before in my life, but this is a great way to refresh my memory.

Not happy with my purchas

They said this book was used, and I was expecting it to have a little wear and tear but there was so much more damage then I was expecting. Half the book had water damage, pages were falling out, some were completely missing. I know it was only $14 but this book should have been free. I personally would not recommend buying from them, only because you aren't sure of what you are getting, you could only be getting half a book.

Great book covering all the basics

A great simple, straight to the point, easy to understand book covers all the basics. Although the camera comes with a manual this book does a great job covering all the basics and where to find them in your camera. It also discusses which settings are more important to play with and which can be left to run on Auto (the camera has 1645 possible controls so this information is invaluable). Must have for any beginner

I recently upgraded from a Kodak EasyShare Z981 14MP Digital Camera to the Nikon D3100. Boy, DSLR's sure can be intimidating when you've never shot with one in your life. I didn't know the difference between aperture and dentures. There are so many options and settings, and all I wanted to do was take some good pictures.

This book is great because it starts off immediately with the top 10 things to do with your new camera, everything from the importance of charging your camera to changing the ISO and white balance. Not only does it show you how to make the changes step-by-step, but it also tells why those changes are important. One of the other things I really liked is that the author gives you assignments at the end of each chapter. There's only so much you can really learn from reading this book, but the assignments ensure you play with the camera and learn how each setting affects the quality of your shots.

One of the things I wish this book did however is stick with the 18-55 lens that the camera comes with. In the book he uses many different lenses to capture some amazing shots, and it makes me want to buy all those expensive lenses that I can't afford.

All in all, I believe this is a must have for any beginner. I read this book over Christmas and it really helped us take some great indoor shots of the family. Greatest thing that this book helped us do...it taught us how to get away from using the "Auto" setting.

Definitely a must read for beginner photographers!

Probably one of my favorite photography books! I purchased this book as a beginner photographer who just got my very first DSLR camera and couldn't be happier with it. It broke down every function the camera has, what's its purpose, and how and when to use it. Also included basic photography tips on how to get better photographs. My favorite part about this book are all the photo examples included in it along with the settings used to achieve the look so you can recreate the photo yourself. It was very helpful and definitely set me on the right path being a beginner photographer. I have since upgraded to a Nikon D5500 and still reference this book from time to time.

I ordered from a fellow student so I was missing one page in the index but the book was exactly the same as the bonded versions and I could take only the chapters I needed by putting it in my binder.

About the Author
Rob Sylvan started contributing photos to iStockphoto in 2002. In December 2002, he became the sixth photo inspector (the people who review all new submissions to the site) to be hired. Over the last seven years he has inspected thousands upon thousands of photos and is in the process of re-writing iStock's photo contributor manual. Beyond his experience with iStockphoto, Rob has been one of three people serving on the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP) Help Desk answering Photoshop and Lightroom questions for all NAPP members. He is also the author of Lightroom 2 for Dummies.

100 % Success!

I recently purchased Rob Sylvan's book. His explanations of the cause of stock photo rejections was very clear and useful, and helped me make sense of the boilerplate rejection responses that so far, far outnumber my acceptances. Utilizing 3 separate pieces of information gleaned from the book, I was able to turn my latest 3 rejections into acceptances. More than just the euphoria of this sudden success is the hope that I can now plan more ambitous photos, without the despair of feeling doomed from the start. "Taking Stock"... a great book!

I just finished the book "Taking Stock: Make money in microstock creating photos that sell" by Rob Sylva and it's coming to you with a two thumbs up recommendation (if I had more thumbs it would get them too).

Rob comes at the subject of stock photography from both sides of the fence, he is a stock photographer AND an image inspector for iStock Photo.

This book is well written, it has a ton of images that help demonstrate and reinforce what he has to say, and is very easy to follow and understand.

One of the things I really like about the book as the inclusion of the images from other stock photographers, including their thoughts and ideas behind that image, and their advice to those considering entering the field of stock photography.

Some of the chapters are:

* Tools of the Trade

* Shooting Tips From the Pros

* Digital Darkroom

* Digital Editing

And these incredibly important topics:

* Avoiding Rejection

* Seeing Like an Inspector

These two chapters alone are worth the price of admission and who would know better than an image inspector?

Rob asks a simple (but powerful) question, "are you working inside the sweet spot of your equipment?". Great question. Why ask your gear to do something it was not designed for, know your limitations and work within them.

He also provides a download link to a group of his own images that he rejected and includes text explaining the reason for their rejection, a great learning tool.

And he wraps up the book discussing the importance and the "how to" of meta data, titles, descriptions, and keywording. It doesn't matter how good your images are if a potential client can't find them while searching.

This is just some of the great information you will find in "Taking Stock", but if you want to find out how well the chapters are put together and how much information is included you don't have to take my word for it, you can (download and) read the entire third chapter of the book right here.

Oh, one last thing... MONEY.

How much money can be made in stock? Take a look at the Christmas tree on cover of his book, it is a tree in Rob's yard that as of the books printing has made him over $13,000.

And this is not as rare as you think, take a listen to the interview with Rich Legg at StudioLighting.net, in it Rich talks about many things (regarding stock) including the importance of having your camera with you all the time, which allowed him to take a picture of a flower while waiting at a fast food drive drive through, an image that has made him thousands and thousands of dollars.

I am not suggesting you stop shooting portraits, weddings, or whatever your photographic specialty is, or that you will retire from one stock image, what I am suggesting is that what you will learn from "Taking Stock" will help you refine your eye to make the images you are already shooting attractive to those who purchase stock and might just add some jingly in your pocket.

This book is a great introduction to creating stock images. Sylvan takes the reader step by step through all the necessary ideas and information needed to get started in stock photography. He talks about the pros and cons in a realistic way without at all discouraging the newcomer.

Throughout each chapter there are activities to help the reader develop skills needed to gain perspective and insight to creating images suitable. He starts with using an organized way to look at existing stock images, evaluate them and then begin to look at the world with the notion of seeing potential stock images.

References are made to Sylvan's preferred online stock image providers. There is discussion about their methods and requirements for selecting stock images to post from those submitted. Sylvan is realistic without being discouraging. The book is replete with samples of successful images along with comments by the creator.

Sylvan is a capable instructor and provides the reader with all the tools necessary to submit their own stock images. This book is not only a great introduction to get the interested reader started but a reference guide to keep handy along the journey through stock image creation.

Finally, I book I can use to teach with.

The CS4 Classroom in a book sucked eggs. I would hand it out as a parting gift to my students.

This CS5 version has been completely re-written. I will actually use this book when I teach my Dreamweaver classes from now on. I'm an Adobe Certified Instructor. The lessons in this book cover all the basics beginners need to know. It covers lots of basic questions about HTML and CSS. There are better books out there for intermediate users, but for someone just getting started with no clue about HTML, CSS and Dreamweaver, I highly recommend this book.
