About the Author
Alan Agresti is Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Statistics at the University of Florida. He taught statistics there for 38 years, including the development of three courses in statistical methods for social science students and three courses in categorical data analysis. He is author of over 100 refereed articles and five texts including "Statistical Methods for the Social Sciences" (with Barbara Finlay, Prentice Hall, 4th edition 2009) and "Categorical Data Analysis" (Wiley, 2nd edition 2002). He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Science from De Montfort University in the UK. In 2003 Alan was named "Statistician of the Year" by the Chicago chapter of the American Statistical Association and in 2004 he was the first honoree of the Herman Callaert Leadership Award in Biostatistical Education and Dissemination awarded by the University of Limburgs, Belgium. He has held visiting positions at Harvard University, Boston University, London School of Economics, and Imperial College and has taught courses or short courses for universities and companies in about 30 countries worldwide. Alan has also received teaching awards from UF and an excellence in writing award from John Wiley & Sons.
Christine Franklin is a Senior Lecturer and Lothar Tresp Honoratus Honors Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Georgia. She has been teaching statistics for more than 30 years at the college level. Chris has been actively involved at the national and state level with promoting statistical education at Pre-K–16 since the 1980s. She is a past Chief Reader for AP Statistic. She has developed three graduate level courses at the University of Georgia in statistics for elementary, middle, and secondary teachers. Chris served as the lead writer for the ASA-endorsed Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) Report: A Pre- K–12 Curriculum Framework.
Chris has been honored by her selection as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, the 2006 Mu Sigma Rho National Statistical Education Award recipient for her teaching and lifetime devotion to statistics education, and numerous teaching and advising awards at the University of Georgia including election to the UGA Teaching Academy. Chris has written more than 50 journal articles and resource materials for textbooks.

This book is excellent for several reasons

This book is excellent for several reasons. First, it has interesting examples from politics, psychology, economics, and the sorts of things you see from science in newspapers to hold the students' attention. Second, the homework questions require the students to use statistical thinking, rather than mere knowledge of procedures. Finally, the teachers' edition has great explanations of the students' most common misconceptions, along with some great suggestions of how to tease out those misconceptions.

Explains Statistics in a wordy and complicated manner

We were the first class at Santa Monica College (SMC) to use this book (Fall 2010), and after the widespread complaints by both professors and students, SMC's Math Department will be reverting to a different book next Fall (2011). Though Alan Agresti is a renowned statistician, this unfortunately, did not translate into a good text for an introductory statistics course. It tries to reinvent the wheel by teaching statistics in a completely different layout which completely does away with the traditional sequence of topics. Unfortunately, it does this job so poorly, there is a complete disconnect between the topics. When I finished the course, I did not see the what the book was trying to do in linking the different topics of Hypothesis testing, regression analysis, Z-table, T-tables, etc. It was only after consulting with a friend with a PhD in Statistics, and through his explanations which filled holes created by the book, was I able to truly appreciate statistics and understand that they connected, and built on each other conceptually and mathematically.
Some good ideas are there. For instance, the book uses real world examples in their homework problems, such as smoking rates and relationships with cancer, relationship between study times and gpa for a particular university.. etc. However, if the concepts are poorly explained themselves, this invalidates much of the usefulness of the problems in the first place.
One of the worst offenses in this book not yet mentioned is the fact that the Test Bank, which your professor may use, seems to be written by a completely different author altogether. The problems on the test have a very different flavor; key words were used differently on the test versus the book! Half of the classes were either getting D's or F's across the board at SMC, for the professors using the test bank.
Professors, schools, please make the wise choice and do NOT use this book for your courses!

Great book

This book accomplishes two basic goals. The book describes how to use a number of common statistical methods. However, more important, the book provides the foundation needed to develop a deeper understanding of statistics. The author writes extremely clearly with precise language and easy to understand text. The examples are excellent. I would consider this to be one of the best written college texts in general.
