Codes or No Codes? That is the question
By Kevin P. Gibbs
I teach several GIS courses and use this book for one of them. Usually I have my students purchase the physical text but recently more and more students are acquiring the Kindle version. I suppose it's valuable to state that the course I use this text for is taught online. Thus, students can't necessarily drop into the campus book store and buy the text which is why they turn to Amazon.
Each chapter establishes a practical example of how desktop GIS analysis can be implemented. In particular, the scenarios often focus on principals of Urban Planning but also deal with environmental health, migration, population change, etc. Each chapter concludes with two exercises based on the readings. One is a Google Earth method and the other is ArcGIS by ESRI. The two separate exercises mirror each other and while both are enlightening I usually just have my students complete the ArcGIS version. The 1st edition only included the ArcGIS version and the second edition is fairly close to the 1st edition but some of the chapters have been rearranged.
Data for the exercises is included in the hardcover edition. In the 1st edition, a disk was included containing the exercise data. In the 2nd edition, the publisher includes a unique scratch-off license key. Students will need to follow the instructions on the removable card containing the key, create an account on the publisher's website and download zipped files containing the exercise data. Something to note about the 2nd edition is that the publisher also included the accompanying instructor's lecture slides in the zip files (arranged by chapter).
My concern with the Kindle edition is that students are now telling me they can't find the access code for the exercise data. As of 7 FEB 2013 Amazon informs buyers in the "Book Description" section of the product statement that "This is the eBook of the printed book and may not include any media, website access codes, or print supplements that may come packaged with the bound book." This statement is dated August 30, 2011.
Amazon needs to clarify this comment. I am unsure if the codes do or do not come with the eBook version. If they do not then clearly state that AND state the implication is that students won't be able to complete the chapter exercises. Any version without the codes needs to be significantly discounted. Currently (13 FEB 2013) the Kindle version is retailing at $103.35 USD but hardcover is $118.94. That savings is not worth the loss of the access codes.
Students purchase the Kindle edition for many reasons. In my case this is an online course and many students do not have access the the campus' bookstore. Further, they enjoy the immediate access to the Kindle edition and don't have to wait for shipping. This is important to students because often they over-register for courses, attend the 1st week of classes and then drop classes they feel aren't worthy of their time. Immediate text acquisition is very important to these highly motivated students.
The publisher needs to grant access to the codes for Kindle editions immediately or Amazon needs to clearly define which Kindle editions come with data access codes and which do not. I will say, there may be value to an edition without codes but only at a significantly discounted price.
As an instructor, I am not willing to suggest students purchase the code-less version and then provide to them my own pre-downloaded files provided on D2L, Blackboard, or other learning management systems. Instead, I'm simply suggesting Amazon clearly define if the codes come with the Kindle edition or not and if those codes do not come with the purchase then significantly discount the price. Further, I implore the publisher to make Kindle edition codes available to users who produce a valid purchase order if acquired for the common retail price.
The success of this Kindle edition and the text itself should not hinge upon incomplete access to the full resource of the text.

Study urban with a new approach
By Haogie Zhu
I was very impressed by the authors broad scope of knowledge on urban phenomenon in both developed and developing countries. The way they introduce various theories in urban geography by incorporating comparative case studies on LA, Chicago, and Mexico City makes the material more concrete to non-urban geographers. The authors systematically walk through the definition, components, dynamics, problems, and planning of urban system. This would be an ideal material for a graduate level class in addition to the undergraduate level it was designed for. The exercises coming with the book provide excellent coverage of the GIS techniques necessary for urban studies. They are closely related to the topic of the book and include some creative use of GIS, such as validating central place theory or modeling neighborhood transition with Markov chains in ArcGIS. The GIS approach is a big complement to the statistics and econometrics used in traditional urban researches.

I teach with this text
By Dr. Jason VanHorn
I use this text in my GIS urban class and find it to be wide-ranging in scope. I have no prerequisites for my course; so many students come in with little GIS knowledge. The book is not designed to teaching you fundamentals of GIS, but does provide GIS exercises that re-enforce urban geographic concepts. The main GIS knowledge gained is rudimentary skills of map production and attribute/spatial querying. The GIS exercises are good and there are minimal typo's in the GIS instructions.
