About the Author
Hugh D. Young is Emeritus Professor of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. He attended Carnegie Mellon for both undergraduate and graduate study and earned his Ph.D. in fundamental particle theory under the direction of the late Richard Cutkosky. He joined the faculty of Carnegie Mellon in 1956 and has also spent two years as a Visiting Professor at the University of California at Berkeley.
Professor Young’s career has centered entirely on undergraduate education. He has written several undergraduate-level textbooks, and in 1973 he became a co-author with Francis Sears and Mark Zemansky for their well-known introductory texts. With their deaths, he assumed full responsibility for new editions of these books until joined by Prof. Freedman for University Physics.
Professor Young is an enthusiastic skier, climber, and hiker. He also served for several years as Associate Organist at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Pittsburgh, and has played numerous organ recitals in the Pittsburgh area. Prof. Young and his wife Alice usually travel extensively in the summer, especially in Europe and in the desert canyon country of southern Utah.
Roger A. Freedman is a Lecturer in Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Dr. Freedman was an undergraduate at the University of California campuses in San Diego and Los Angeles, and did his doctoral research in nuclear theory at Stanford University under the direction of Professor J. Dirk Walecka. He came to UCSB in 1981 after three years teaching and doing research at the University of Washington.
At UCSB, Dr. Freedman has taught in both the Department of Physics and the College of Creative Studies, a branch of the university intended for highly gifted and motivated undergraduates. He has published research in nuclear physics, elementary particle physics, and laser physics. In recent years, he has helped to develop computer-based tools for learning introductory physics and astronomy. When not in the classroom or slaving over a computer, Dr. Freedman can be found either flying (he holds a commercial pilot’s license) or driving with his wife, Caroline, in their 1960 Nash Metropolitan convertible.
A. Lewis Ford is Professor of Physics at Texas A&M University. He received a B.A. from Rice University in 1968 and a Ph.D. in chemical physics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1972. After a one-year postdoc at Harvard University, he joined the Texas A&M physics faculty in 1973 and has been there ever since. Professor Ford’s research area is theoretical atomic physics, with a specialization in atomic collisions. At Texas A&M he has taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses, but primarily introductory physics.

I was fortunate to have two copies of the precursor to this ...

I was fortunate to have two copies of the precursor to this book for physics - sixth and seventh versions I think. Some of the physics department staff at my university didn't like this book because they thought that it "was too easy". I consider Feynman's lectures the near perfect embodiment of physics lecture as a narrative, but I have to say that two volumes of Sears, Zemansky and Young comprised a great book and reference as well with many worked examples. The criticism was that other texts had harder problems - problems that often involved incorporating mathematical insights that did not immediately support the problem except to demonstrate that life sometimes makes solving problems difficult. Putting things at odd angles or offset coordinate to intentional produced difficult answers really isn't a help to comprehension. If your goal is to teach a concept, make it understandable so that the visual component is real. Complicating the world with mathematical convolutions at the expense of the initial appreciation and visualization of the principle is not a good tradeoff. BTW , "University Physics", Sears and Zemansky, minus Young, seems to have been discontinued in the 13th edition. Too bad. You are lucky to have this book. It is a competent piece.

Extremely Helpful

Extremely helpful textbook.
During the first half of my introductory physics class I glanced at the book only once, mistakingly thought it was too complicated in its explanations and then cast it aside. This was a mistake.
Like a physics textbook should be, this book revolves around practical examples of the methods it teaches and dedicates about half of the chapters to varying levels of every relevant type of question, followed by exceptionally well-explained explanations.
I am now studying for my final by going over all of these questions. Simply fantastic resource. I have never valued a textbook so much.
If you are assigned this book for class, use it. If you are looking to study introductory physics (mainly mechanics, wave motion, fluids, thermodynamics) on your own, use it.

Physics is hard...this is one of the best

Amazing collection of whiny reviews. This text is one of only two CLASSIC introductory college physics textbooks, towering above all the others and deserving of that characterization, the other being the textbook by Haliday and Resnick. Young (and Freedman) simply carry on the tradition of this amazing text begun by the original authors more than fifty years ago, now dead, Sears and Zemansky. Generations of serious physicists began their college training with one or the other of these great textbooks. So if there are too many words and you want the picture book version of physics, change your major and get over it. Physics is hard and not for you. BTW using this textbook my students regularly get 4s and 5s on the AP Physics C exam.
