About the Author
JOHN MCMURRY, educated at Harvard and Columbia, has taught approximately 17,000 students in general and organic chemistry over a 30-year period. A Professor of Chemistry at Cornell University since 1980, Dr. McMurry previously spent 13 years on the faculty at the University of California at Santa Cruz. He as received numerous awards, including the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship (1969-71), the National Institute of Health Career Development Award (1975-80), the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award (1986-87), and the Max Planck Research Award (1991). ROBERT C. FAY, Professor of Chemistry at Cornell University, has been teaching general and inorganic chemistry at Cornell since 1962. Known for his clear, well-organized lectures, Dr. Fay was the 1980 recipient of the Clark Distinguished Teaching Award. He has also taught as a visiting professor at Harvard University and at the University of Bologna (Italy). A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Oberlin College, Fay received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. He has been an NSF Science Faculty Fellow at the University of East Anglia and the University of Sussex (England) and a NATO/Heineman Senior Fellow at Oxford University.

About the Author

Gary Rockswold has been a professor and teacher of mathematics, computer science, astronomy, and physical science for over 35 years. He has taught not only at the undergraduate and graduate college levels, but he has also taught middle school, high school, vocational school, and adult education. He received his BA degree with majors in mathematics and physics from St. Olaf College and his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Iowa State University. He has been a principal investigator at the Minnesota Supercomputer Institute, publishing research articles in numerical analysis and parallel processing and is currently an emeritus professor of mathematics at Minnesota State University, Mankato. He is an author for Pearson Education and has over 10 current textbooks at the developmental and precalculus levels. His developmental coauthor and friend is Terry Krieger. They have been working together for over a decade. Making mathematics meaningful for students and professing the power of mathematics are special passions for Gary. In his spare time he enjoys sailing, doing yoga, and spending time with his family.

Terry Krieger has taught mathematics for 18 years at the middle school, high school, vocational, community college and university levels. His undergraduate degree in secondary education is from Bemidji State University in Minnesota, where he graduated summa cum laude. He received his MA in mathematics from Minnesota State University - Mankato. In addition to his teaching experience in the United States, Terry has taught mathematics in Tasmania, Australia, and in a rural school in Swaziland, Africa, where he served as a Peace Corps volunteer. Terry is currently teaching at Rochester Community and Technical College in Rochester, Minnesota. He has been involved with various aspects of mathematics textbook publication for more than 14 years and has joined his friend Gary Rockswold as coauthor of a developmental math series published by Pearson Education. In his free time, Terry enjoys spending time with his wife and two boys, physical fitness, wilderness camping, and trout fishing.

More than expected!

This textbook is more than what I expected. It is what the University of Phoenix uses with their beginning and intermediate math classes. The authors are quite thorough and offer examples with solutions to help the reader understand the contents of their book. I do not do well with math, let alone algebra; however, I highly recommend this textbook.

I really appreciated having the book

I recommend getting this book if this is your textbook for your Algebra class. I am studying online and I do not find the PDF chapters to be easy to study math from. It was easier for me to have the book to page through.
The authors are very good at explaining how to do the problems and showing how we use math in our everyday lives.

Wanted a book and I received a DVD. I realize that the book would be on the disc but if I wanted to stare at the computer, I would just google the questions. I haven't even opened it. Be sure to read the whole posting before buying.

About the Author

Marge Lial was always interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself has inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, is now affiliated with American River College.

Marge is an avid reader and traveler. Her travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She is particularly interested in archeology. Trips to various digs and ruin sites have produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan.

Raymond N. Greenwell earned a B.A. in Mathematics and Physics from the University of San Diego, and an M.S. in Statistics, an M.S. in Applied Mathematics, and a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Michigan State University, where he earned the graduate student teaching award in 1979. After teaching at Albion College in Michigan for four years, he moved to Hofstra University in1983, where he currently is Professor of Mathematics.

Raymond has published articles on fluid mechanics, mathematical biology, genetic algorithms, combinatorics, statistics, and undergraduate mathematics education. He is a member of MAA, AMS, SIAM, NCTM, and AMATYC. He is currently (2002-2005) governor of the Metropolitan New York Section of the MAA, as well as webmaster and liaison coordinator, and he received a distinguished service award from the Section in 2003. He is an outdoor enthusiast and leads trips in the Sierra Club’s Inner City Outings program.

Nathan P. Ritchey earned a B.A. in Mathematics with a minor in Music from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. He earned a M.S. in Applied Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University. He is currently a Professor of Mathematics and Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Youngstown State University. He has published articles in economics, honors education, medicine, mathematics, operations research, and student recruitment. Nate is a Consultant/Evaluator for the North Central Association's Higher Learning Commission and regularly participates in program evaluations.

In recognition of his numerous activities, Nate has received the Distinguished Professor Award for University Service, the Youngstown Vindicator's "People Who Make a Difference Award," the Watson Merit Award for Department Chairs, the Spirit in Education Award from the SunTex corporation, and the Provost's Merit Award for significant contributions to the Honors Program.

No code.

This may be my fault. But I was under the impression that new math books came with a code for my math lab. Every other one that I have bought was this way. No code came with this one, and I bought it new just for that reason. I will now return it and get it used then buy a code.

I took an online class over the summer and used this book. Eventhough the teacher was not helpful, the book was. All the exercises were extremely helpful and the text was simple and easy to read. I would recommend this book for any who has to take this class.

Great Book. I Learned So Much from It.

5/15: Finite Mathematics is an excellent book to learn about various of topics such as linear functions, systems of linear equations and matrices, linear programming through the graphical method and the simplex method, mathematics finance, logic, sets and probability, counting principles, statistics, Markov chains, and game theory. Not all of them are explored very deeply but enough to get one's feet wet. Initially, I did not know anything about the simplex method, Markov chains, and game theory before approaching Finite Mathematics. After solving every problems in these sections as well as in other sections, I feel very confident of my knowledge and appreciate the level of pedagogy by the authors. The treatment of every section per area has been very clear and lucid, enough to get one started on the practice problems without much worry. Perhaps the biggest benefit of working with Finite Mathematics is its solutions manual which is extremely well-explained for every odd problems (I was able to procure a pdf file of the other solutions manual online for the even problems). So, from cover to cover, I did everything, learned as much as I could, and found myself illuminated to move forward. Once in a while, there is a problem that is so stupidly hard and difficult that I won't worry about it. In other words, 99% of the problems in the book are quite doable because much of them are very connected within a section in a transitionary manner. My time, however long it was, spent with the book has been worth it. Although the applications provided by the authors have been rich and diverse, I have to complain one thing about the problems: there are too many of them that are overly redundant and show no difference among them. So, the authors need to tone down the number of such problems and increase the number of diverse problems. All in all, Finite Mathematics is the book to get if you really want to learn linear functions, systems of linear equations and matrices, linear programming through the graphical method and the simplex method, mathematics finance, logic, sets and probability, counting principles, statistics, Markov chains, and/or game theory at a very high pedagogical level.

The EPUB Bible

I've been a designer since before there was any designation between print designers and web designers, the web in its current form hardly existed. The way design has changed over the past 20 years is amazing, and now we're heading towards the other extreme where there will be no print or web designers again, all designers will know both. The world still needs us to help keep things looking good, even if design is often only noticed when it's not done well (much like housework). With the advent of ereaders there is yet another system to learn, and the available information on ebook formatting is sketchy at best, or it was until the EPUB guru Elizabeth Castro's latest publication, EPUB Straight to the Point: Creating ebooks for iPad and other ereaders. This is the definitive book on EPUB formatting. As an experienced designer/intermediate coder this is exactly what I wanted, and as I also teach InDesign I'm quite familiar with the beginner's perspective and wanted something for my students. This book is very well organized and the information is clear and easy to understand, covering the entire range beginning with defining what an EPUB is to advanced formatting techniques. While I think knowledge of HTML and CSS is really necessary to be successful at working in EPUB, someone who wants to self-publish could learn enough here to manage their own book (though still, at least a smattering of HTML and CSS is going to be needed). At the same time, experienced designers and coders will find plenty of advanced formatting features to make this book indispensable.

The first chapter is about using Microsoft Word to write EPUBs, something I personally wouldn't want to tackle, but obviously this is going to be great for self-publishers and for non-designer coders who don't use InDesign. This chapter would also apply for use of any text editor other than InDesign. The second chapter covers using InDesign, so this is where I started reading in earnest. Liz does an excellent job of explaining proper use of styles, including character and nested styles. Her explanation about using GREP Find/Change to edit local formatting might be a bit confusing for any InDesign newbies, but GREP is an awesome tool that InDesign users should know, hopefully anyone not already familiar with GREP will be inspired to learn more.

The Adobe articles about using InDesign for EPUB I've read previously also covered much about general layout and use of styles, but Liz's book is far more comprehensive even just in the chapter on InDesign. For example, Adobe simply says that a text wrap around an image isn't possible, and while technically it's true that InDesign can't do that straight out of export it is possible to anchor images in the text and manually adjust the CSS after export. I'd already seen EPUBs with text wraps so I knew Adobe was leaving something out (naturally, their focus is more about what InDesign can do than EPUB formatting). Metadata and exporting--both from CS4 and CS5--are covered more thoroughly than Adobe's documentation as well. In the metadata section of this chapter, Liz notes that InDesign will not add the date format correctly and therefore InDesign EPUBs will not pass validation straight from export. I was disappointed when I discovered this previously, it seems to me that CS5 should have allowed for that, but Liz not only covers how to manually correct that, she includes a URL to a site with InDesign scripts to resolve the problem. Awesome! I haven't tested the scripts myself as I'm going to end up breaking open the files for manual formatting anyway, but it's really good to know that this is a possibility now.

The next chapter is perhaps the most important one of all, it discusses the files within an EPUB, testing, zipping (including using Terminal to zip on a Mac, unfortunately necessary), and validating. She even covers how to move EPUBs to an iPad and converting EPUB to the Kindle Mobi format. Finally, the last chapter--the longest and most extensive--covers advanced formatting. There is a list of fonts available for iPad ebooks (extremely helpful). Formatting options that seem subtle yet are vital design elements, such as hyphenation and spacing, are explained thoroughly, as well as text wrapping around images and sidebars, tables, and even including video.

As a giant added bonus you can download the example files she uses in the book so you can follow along and try everything out yourself--as an instructor I know how valuable it is to have exercise files like this and I very much appreciate that Liz was thoughtful enough to provide them. Liz mentions posting updates/errata on her site, but in everything I covered I did not find any problems or errors, I really don't expect errata will be an issue.

Over-looked answers not in the book

I found the book interesting but clearly way behind the times in what is being done with EPUB in the Open Source community. The author complains about lack of tools and documentation when she clearly hasn't pulled up the technical spec. docs for the standard which lay everything out. She also talks about creating EPUBs by hand when this clearly isn't needed. She clearly isn't aware of Sigil. It is a full WYSIWYG EPUB editor and creator. You can use the default CSS it provides or include your own to create and edit an EPUB. I have my own CCS for Sigil/EPUB and it works great. The author talks about converting EPUB to mobi. I would never bother to do that by hand. There is a great Open Source program called "Calibre" which will manage your e-book libraries and convert between dozens of different e-book formats (as long as they don't have DRM). It is very flexible and lets you control how the conversion is done, or let it use defaults and edit the result later. More and more people are going to become aware of EPUB since it is starting to become the default standard format for e-books. It is quite powerful and there are a lot of different options available with it that most people aren't aware of. I should also mention that Calibre has the best EPUB reader out there, and it comes in Linux, Mac and Windows flavors.

I would also mention that every single problem the author complains about with EPUB is solved by default in Sigil. It is very easy to edit, mark, and change any of the information in the EPUB and associated metadata files. I would suggest that perhaps the author should have done more research before writing this book, as there are many obvious technical errors in this book such as this.

A lot of great information in this little book

I've been going to Liz Castro's blog, [...], for a while, as I tried to teach myself ePub creation out of InDesign. This book collects all of that great information, getting down to the nuts and bolts of the coding you will need to do to make your eBook work like you expect it to. Being used to computer books that you have to wade through 1000+ pages to find the information you want, I was pleased to find out how complete this book is with 192 pages. I would have like to have seen a couple of pages explaining proper sizing and original resolution of pictures for an ePub design (to avoid getting "the head of a pin" photo in your ePub). Other than that one omission, this book covered all the other questions I had on fixing the ePubs I've created.
