About the Author

Raymond A. Barnett, a native of California, received his B.A. in mathematical statistics from the University of California at Berkeley and his M.A. in mathematics from the University of Southern California. He has been a member of the Merritt College Mathematics Department, and was chairman of the department for four years. Raymond Barnett has authored or co-authored eighteen textbooks in mathematics, most of which are still in use. In addition to international English editions, a number of books have been translated into Spanish. Co-authors include Michael Ziegler, Marquette University; Thomas Kearns, Northern University; Charles Burke, City College of San Francisco; John Fuji, Merritt College; and Karl Byleen, Marquette University.

Michael R. Ziegler (late) received his B.S. from Shippensburg State College and his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Delaware. After completing post doctoral work at the University of Kentucky, he was appointed to the faculty of Marquette University where he held the rank of Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science. Dr. Ziegler published over a dozen research articles in complex analysis and co-authored eleven undergraduate mathematics textbooks with Raymond A. Barnett, and more recently, Karl E. Byleen.

Karl E. Byleen received his B.S., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from the University of Nebraska. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science of Marquette University. He has published a dozen research articles on the algebraic theory of semigroups.

Michael Daley is co-founder of 71Squared.com and author of Learning iOS Game Programming. 71Squared.com is an indie development shop that produces OS X-based tools for game developers namely Particle Designer and Glyph Designer. Mike also produces video tutorials through the 71Squared.com blog, which cover the basics of game engine design using a relaxed easy to follow approach. Mike is a strong believer in delivering resources that help new entrants into game programming get up and running by breaking things down and introducing simple approaches first. A great book for learning about games programming

Having nearly finished the book I thought it would be a good idea to write a review.

Reading the last review I felt even more compelled to write my own. The last reviewer really hasn't got a clue about what this book is about! He tries to pitch it as a book that covers many different technologies in great detail and fails. There is a note on the first page of chapter 2 that tells that totally contradicts what he says.

Note
It is not intended that this book will teach you how to develop in Objective-C or C or teach you everything you need to know about the other technologies in their own right; there are many excellent books and online resources that cover OpenGL and OpenAL in greater detail. We will however cover these topics in enough detail to allow you to understand why we are using them and how.

Thats what I love about this book! It tells you how to write an entire game from start to finish and doesn't bore you with incredibly complex algorithms or low level code or the ins and outs of every technology.

As for the game engine you write, it's very modular so you can include only the bits you need in your game. I wanted to recreate the JetPack game I played when I was younger. With this book I'm well on the way. It's saved me a huge amount of time trying to learn from other resources on the net.

Their forum and blog is quite active too, I've posted a few questions and they've answered promptly.

This is why computer books used to come with CDs

One thing to be very clear about: this book is largely about tile and sprite-based games, a la Legend of Zelda. It includes a fair bit of information about optimization and the like (the messaging overhead involved in the Objective-C runtime can slow you down, so dropping to straight C is not a bad idea sometimes). The instructions are reasonably clear, although the selection of development tools required is rather extensive. This is part of the problem -- with the increased amount of broadband internet access out there, computer book publishers have come to the conclusion that they don't need to include software with the books. A lot of the software in this book is already obsolete and not supported by its original authors, and some of it is Web-only, making them rather poor choices for any kind of professional development.

However, the book does as advertised -- walks you through the steps of creating a basic game, while giving you enough background to understand what's going on along the way. And that, really, is all you need. Just beware that it might not be very useful a year or two from now.

Lots of errors

Poorly edited. Many of the text references to the code use the wrong method names or quote the wrong lines of code altogether. It is absolutely essential to download the source code; there were many occasions where I found it necessary to look at more of the source than was printed in the book to understand what the text was saying. If you are willing to spend the time to sort out these problems, the book is otherwise not bad. The design of the game engine seems solid. The reader definitely needs to have at least a passing acquaintance with Objective C to understand the book. I am revising my previous 2-star review to 3 stars since the book is definitely useful in spite of its flaws. This review is based on the Kindle edition.

About the Author

Paul G. Hewitt

Former silver-medal boxing champion, sign painter, uranium prospector, and soldier, Paul began college at the age of 27, with the help of the GI Bill. He pioneered the conceptual approach to teaching physics at the City College of San Francisco. He has taught as a guest teacher at various middle schools and high schools, the University of California at both the Berkeley and Santa Cruz campuses, and the University of Hawaii at both the Manoa and Hilo campuses. He also taught for 20 years at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, which honored him with its Outstanding Educator Award in 2000. He is the author of Conceptual Physics and a co-author of Conceptual Physical Science and Conceptual Physical Science Explorations (with John and Leslie).

Want to teach yourself physics?

I would imagine that the answer to my subject heading is, for most people, NO! But for me it was YES!, as I'd never had a physics class, and it was essential, for research that I am conducting, that I have slightly more than an elementary grasp of physics. I turned to this book, and am glad that I did.
This book, thankfully, is written in conceptual terms. There are few equations - because equations are necessary in science - but you don't need to know calculus or trigonometry to read this book and walk away with a solid foundation.
The author has a clear and easy tone about his writing, and breaks complex concepts down into their simple building blocks so that a typical layperson can understand. I know - because I'm as typical a layperson as they come regarding the sciences.
I can't recommend this highly enough.

The conceptual physics standard

I am a physics teacher with a degree in physics and I think this is one of the best physics texts I have ever seen. I have used it for quite a few years now, with excellent results. Hewitt packs a lot of information into the book, but teachers and students are not expected to get through it all. The extra material gives the book great applications for a wide variety of audiences, but the responsibility is on the teacher to use it in a way that is not confusing to students. This is the case with any of the standard physics texts (Halliday Resnick, Giancoli).

Anyone who discounts this book because it has more words and cartoons than equations and math problems in it has no idea what understanding physics can be. Physics has too long been abused as an applied math course, and this book is a welcome remedy for this. For a general audience, this book provides an excellent overview of the fundamental concepts that make our world run. For science-bound students, it provides an excellent conceptual foundation for a more rigorous calculus-based course where deeper understanding of the connection between math and nature can be explored.

On major fault of the book, as one reviewer pointed out, is that Hewitt includes some problems that he does not give readers the math skills to solve. If a teacher assigns these problems, it is necessary that the students have access to the supplementary material written for the text that explains this math. But as a conceptual physics text for a conceptual physics course, Hewitt's book is unparalleled.

Reader-friendly book with online tutorials makes physics easy to digest

This was my first quarter taking physics. In the beginning I was somewhat intimidated, since my only knowledge of physics were tidbits I had learned from watching the Science Channel and various Michio Kaku shows. However, upon reading the introduction section, I knew it would not be as bad as I had anticipated. The author states in the intro that he wrote the book using his own personal experiences and real-life situations in order to make the book feel personal, rather than like a bland textbook. And I am more than glad he did. His stories in each chapter make the reading easy to understand and remember. They also help the reader apply physics to everyday life.
In addition to the book, there are online tutorials and games for every chapter. The code in the book is the password to login. It helps tremendously. The site even has a digital copy of the book, which helps if lugging the book around is inconvenient. And if that weren't enough, the author even includes classroom videos of demonstrations as well as self quizzes for every chapter.

Yes i bought a used book, however i expected a better for what i paid for. The book still had papers from the previous owner and a lot of writing on the inside. This is the fourth edition of my first book: a beginner's guide to the PHP programming language. This book was written for the average computer user wanting to begin developing dynamic Web sites. No prior programming experience is assumed, although you should already be familiar with the basics of HTML. The focus of the book is the PHP language itself, but two chapters introduce MySQL and SQL, in order to start using a database backend.

With the fourth edition of the book, I started by fixing any minor problems and updating the code for the latest version of PHP. New in this edition is a "Review and Pursue" section at the end of each chapter. The review prompts revisit the chapter's key points. The pursue prompts are specific recommendations for how to apply what you just learned on your own. As with any of the book's material, you can turn to the book's supporting forum for help or feedback on the "Review and Pursue" section.

Also new in this edition is an added chapter, called "Putting It All Together." The chapter demonstrates how to use everything covered in the book to assemble a mini-Web application, with authentication and full CRUD (Create, Retrieve, Update, and Delete) functionality.

Beginner's Take Note: Ullman's Is the Ultimate PHP Book

Larry Ullman's PHP for the Web is unsurpassed as a beginner's guide to learning PHP. The book, for instance, covers many essential topics, such as variables, forms, sessions and cookies, numbers, and strings. Ullman furthermore provides excellent screenshots of the code to provide the macro, or `big picture', perspective while providing an explanatory break down of each piece of code for a micro perspective. Ullman also uses relevant examples that are necessary for making a professional Web site, including log-in pages and editing features for administrators. More importantly, Ullman's style of writing is instantly engaging, wondrously eloquent, and grammatically polished, making for a thoroughly enjoyable read of what might otherwise be considered a dry topic.

Prior to reading Larry Ullman's book, I read the entirety of a PHP manual by Kevin Yank, concluding the book with complete confusion and no practical skills. However, it appears that Yank has a new edition that might have some improved features. In addition to reading Yank's manual on PHP, I read Janet Valade's Dummies guide, which was the worst PHP manual imaginable, heavily laden with coding errors and misprints.

As a beginner to PHP and computer programming, the key to my success with Larry Ullman's book included the prior reading of Javascript, A Beginner's Guide, Third Edition by John Pollock. Pollock's book broke down not only Javascript into accessible components, but also explained the basics of computer languages, such as variables, arrays, regular expressions, and other essentials necessary for a solid background in introductory computer programming and PHP. After reading Pollock's book, Ullman's book appeared lucid and friendly-- a logical next step. Also, while reading Larry Ullman's book, I paid for a month-to-month subscription to Lynda.com and watched her video tutorials on PHP and MySQL. These tutorials accompanied with a read of Larry Ullman's book made for an excellent PHP and MySQL learning experience.

Larry Ullman's book is the ultimate guide for learning PHP for beginners. The logical progression from this book is Larry Ullman's PHP and MySQL for Dynamic Web Sites coupled with Rick Morelan's Beginning SQL Joes 2 Pros . After I finish reading Larry Ullman's second book in the series, PHP and MySQL for Dynamic Web Sites, I plan on tackling one of his subsequent books in the progression on how to make a shopping cart. Ullman also provides a book on advanced PHP, which follows his PHP and MySQL for Dynamic Web Sites book. Ullman is the master of providing easy-to-follow, comprehensive learning tools for programming in PHP; the Ullman series is a must for any beginner's library.

Very clear, to-the-point book with good examples

I have been making websites here and there, simple ones, for over 10 years now. I also have good knowledge of programming, and have been doing that for many years as well (C, C++, Java, and other languages). When it comes to web programming, all I've used before is pretty much only HTML, and some random javascript codes picked up over the internet. I thought PHP was not for me, but mostly, I thought it would be too long to learn.

As it turns out, it is an easier language than most other languages. And this book makes it all the more easy, and goes right to the point. The examples are plentiful--the author mainly starts whatever he wishes to show with an HTML form that is to be handled by a PHP script. The page layout is really well designed as well: all pages are divided into two columns, and on the outer-most columns you have the text, while on the inner-most columns you have codes and boxes. The codes are well laid out as well, with the important or new lines of codes being highlighted in grey. After each example, the author also gives a series of tips, which are very insightful, and generally a little more advanced than the text itself.

This book is certainly written for a beginning audience, when it comes to both PHP and programming more generally. However, even though I'm a beginner only in PHP and certainly not in programming, I appreciate this book immensely, and it is extremely helpful. Importantly, I do NOT deem it to be too simple. It is the case that I read over some sections quickly, but I'm still doing what I bought this book for: learning PHP.

I was hesitating between this book and the author's more advanced PHP and MySQL for Dynamic Web Sites: Visual QuickPro Guide (4th Edition), but what made me choose was the fact that the current book's emphasis is on PHP, all the while covering MySQL databases in chapters 12 and 13, whereas the other book (the QuickPro Guide) seems to be much more oriented towards the use of MySQL databases than to be oriented towards PHP in general. I wanted to make sure that I had strong foundations in PHP before I consider creating very big and complex databases; and the current book, namely the QuickStart Guide, is doing just that. Plus, the QuickStart Guide does include an introduction to MySQL anyway--which I suspect will be more than sufficient for my needs (what is covered in the QuickPro Guide in terms of databases, namely the creation of a forum, of a blog, and of an e-commerce site with a cart and catalogs, is way more detailed than what I need in terms of databases, which is more simple and basic).

The bottomline is: Very highly recommended, for novice or advanced programmers alike, who want to pick up PHP and a basic but sufficient knowledge of MySQL databases.

Great book for the true beginner

I haven't found a lot of great PHP books out there, but the couple of books I've checked out by Lawrence Ullman have been first rate. Ullman writes very clearly, and this book, along with the CSS book in the Visual Quick Start guide series (by Jason Cranford Teague), are clear winners. I'd recommend skipping the VQSG JavaScript book, though.

I don't see how Ullman could make the introduction to PHP clearer or more gentle than this, other than than taking a Sitepoint-like approach and making the book full color with a lot of screen shots.

That being said, if you're not a true beginner, you can probably start with Ullman's PHP and MySql book, which I'm currently reading in the previous edition.
