About the Author
Hugh D. Young is Emeritus Professor of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University. He earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from that university. He earned his Ph.D. in fundamental particle theory under the direction of the late Richard Cutkosky. He also had two visiting professorships at the University of California, Berkeley.
Dr. Young’s career has centered entirely on undergraduate education. He has written several undergraduate-level textbooks, and became a coauthor with Francis Sears and Mark Zemansky for their well-known introductory texts. In addition to his role on Sears and Zemansky’s College Physics, he is also author of Sears and Zemansky’s University Physics.

uses for pearson teaching tools

None of the homework problem solutions are ever adequately demonstrated in this book, making it almost useless in terms of learning basic physics. Some potential uses are, dropping it and measuring its acceleration, tossing it in a river to observe reference frames, and calculating the angle and velocity you must throw it at to hit its author from 100 meters away while standing 30m above level ground.

Can't self-teach (properly) with this book

Some topics are explained well, others are not. The worst thing about this book is that you can't really teach yourself with it. There are plenty of practice problems at the end of each chapter, but in the book's answer section they only show the answers to the odd-numbered problems (and they even skip some of those).... even worse, they give the correct answer but don't show how to get it. That makes it pretty much worthless in terms of self-teaching, and the online hw program is just as helpless.
Professors: please don't use this book for your classes unless you actually know how to teach well... and even if you do, I'm sure you can find a better book than this.

Very Difficult to follow along.

This book takes an approach as if you already know the material, instead of trying to teach it to you. The book is flooded with examples, but not very good ones. The examples seem like they are teaching you new stuff instead of applying what you just learned, and many times you are found seeing equations that have not been taught yet. It is a very difficult book to understand unless you have seen the material already and have somewhat of an understanding on it. This is the complete opposite from their (Pearson's) Chemistry Book, which does an excellent job at breaking down the material.
Do yourself a favor and look for another Physics book if you want to avoid headaches and PLENTY of frustrations.
