Prompt delivery, Do Not Like Design

Prompt delivery. Did not realize book was actual loose leaf. Not even a paperback cover. For the price of the book, I think paperback would be much better protection. Loose leaf paper can easily be ripped from binder rings leaving the book in less desirable condition to resell. And you have to spend more money to buy a three ring binder to place the pages in. Not satisfied.

About the Author

Michael Sullivan, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University, received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Mike taught at Chicago State for 35 years before recently retiring. He is a native of Chicago’s South Side and divides his time between a home in Oak Lawn IL and a condo in Naples FL.

 

Mike is a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America. He is a past president of the Text and Academic Authors Association and is currently Treasurer of its Foundation. He is a member of the TAA Council of Fellows and was awarded the TAA Mike Keedy award in 1997 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. In addition, he represents TAA on the Authors Coalition of America.

 

Mike has been writing textbooks for more than 35 years and currently has 15 books in print, twelve with Pearson Education. When not writing, he enjoys tennis, golf, gardening, and travel.

 

Mike has four children: Kathleen, who teaches college mathematics; Michael III, who also teaches college mathematics, and who is his coauthor on two precalculus series; Dan, who is a sales director for Pearson Education; and Colleen, who teaches middle-school and secondary school mathematics. Twelve grandchildren round out the family.

Contains A LOT of information!

I've never been a fan of Algebra, but this book had me quite excited to get started.

The book is packed with information and it's not for those with a weak heart. There is very little spacing between the explanations, the examples, and the practice problems. The good thing about this book is there are a ton of Practice Problems which will help you perfect your understanding of the material. The bad thing... the answers in the back of the book are not the full answers. Most chapters only have the odd numbered answers which makes it hard to figure out if you're getting the other questions correct.

From what I understand, the Student's Solutions Manual for College Algebra that is sold as a separate book, only provides the solutions to the odd numbers as well.

The best part about this book is it's integration with MyMathLab. I believe your instructor can have your course setup per their own specific options, but in general, you'll see practice, homework, quizzes, and tests. The practice is awesome! There are about a ton of questions that you can work on and get the answers to, along with having MyMathLab "Help Me Solve This" or "View and Example" options. This is the best way to learn this stuff. Be prepared though, these exercises will take you a long time if you plan to work through them all. After you finish the problems you can take a quiz to earn "Mastery Points" which are a great way to determine how well you've learned the material. From there you will move on to the actual homework, quizzes, and tests.

As another reviewer mentioned, this book is not for those who are learning straight from it without lecture. The lectures help explain some things that you might not "get" when it's on paper. Personally, I had to refer to YouTube lectures/examples as well as explanations from MathIsFun and PurpleMath because the book was not entirely clear.

If you get this book for a required class and it needs MyMathLab, make sure you purchase one new, or one that specifically says it has the code so you don't get stuck with a code-less copy. I think MyMathLab makes this book a really great book, without it, I'd probably deduct another star.

Sullivan's is an outstanding book. The language is easy to understand, and it has a good amount of examples and practice exercises at the end of the chapters to understand the subjects. It is an excellent learning tool.

Knowing the rule framework helps immensely!

I am sharing a small practical example to illustrate the worth of this beautiful book! I recently joined a company which is the leader in web application acceleration and performance management, streaming media services and content delivery. Many of the rules in this collection helped me to grasp the scalability architecture and principles at my new job very quickly, few are listed below:

Rule 4 -- Reduce DNS Lookups
Chapter 6 -- Using Caching Aggressively (several rules)
Rule 16 -- Actively Use Log Files
Rule 29 -- Failing to Design for Rollback Is Designing for Failure

The fact is if you consider yourself a scalability/infrastructure/cloud architect or manager, this book is a must. I have experienced first hand the rule of "Failing to Design for Rollback Is Designing for Failure" ... so I have deep appreciation of the authors great service in codifying the technical-management scalability framework.

Valuable and well-written

I liked this book so much I read it twice so that I'd get the maximum benefit from its recommendations. The authors clearly have strong real world experience so their recommendations seem highly relevant. I also like the way the book is organized into 50 rules that you can absorb in small chunks. I was also impressed with the quality of the writing - clear, grammatically correct, and very meaty without a lot of fluff or overly technical jargon.

With regard to the specific recommendations in the book, I was very pleased to see "Don't Overengineer the Solution" as Rule 1. In my experience, this is by far the biggest problem in software today and is the biggest cause of not only scalability problems, but performance, maintainability, and extensibility problems as well.

My only small quibble with the book is the lack of a discussion of object relational mapping technologies. As the authors note several times, the database is usually the most difficult component to scale. I think that is absolutely true. Given that fact, I think the database needs to be fully tuned and optimized and this includes the data access code. As other authors have noted (and my own experience confirms), ORM generally performs and scales very poorly. Not to mention it often represents "overengineering". Therefore, I expected at least some discussion of that issue.

With that small criticism aside, I highly recommend this book.

Solutions the Work to Real World Problems

I always like books that give me information I can use and make me look smart all at the same time. Scalability Rules is just that kind of book.

It offers clear, understandable and most importantly, implementable solutions to the real problems in building high-traffic web sites. Reading Scalability Rules is like hiring Abbott and Fisher to solve your site performance problems. The book's flow and and coverage sound just like they're talking to you in your conference room about your own website.

Also, I really applaud the book's layout recognizing that different technical team members are looking for different information. For instance, manager's are directed to some chapters while other sections are focused on software developers and technical operations folks.

A great read, technically brilliant and incredibly helpful.

Pearson sucks

I bought the wrong access code because they all have identical covers. My own fault for not reading the fine print, but they could at least make the access code have the same cover as the textbook. I opened the package and tried to register the code, realizing it's the wrong one. I emailed Pearson to see if they could invalidate the wrong code and I haven't heard back. I purchased the correct code directly from them, but I had to pay twice. Seller, on the other hand, was great. I got my package in a timely fashion.

Only if there's extra credit attached

I purchased this product as an "extra credit" opportunity for my organic chemistry class. It was a nightmare. It alternated between questions that were ridiculously easy and ridiculously hard and good luck diagraming molecular structures with their really fussy program. Oh, and just for fun, it's prone to occasionally freezing up! I'm a much better biologist then a chemist, and I persevered with this awful program and it helped my grade in a class that was hard for me. But it didn't teach me anything, and unless there's a carrot attached to it, I wouldn't 't recommend this useless program.

Excellent intro to the mathematics of traditional statistics

The first half of the book begins with basic discrete and continuous probability theory. It continues with thorough overviews of the basic distributions (normal, Poisson, binomial, multinomial, chi-squared and student-T). The focus is on basic probability and variance analysis, though it briefly covers higher-order moments.

The second half of this book is devoted to hypothesis testing and regression. There is an excellent explanation of the mathematical presuppositions of the various classical experimental methodologies ranging from chi-square to t-tests to generalized likelihood ratio testing. It contains a very nicely organized chapter on general regression analysis, concentrating on the common least squares case under the usual transforms (e.g. exponential, logistic, etc.).

Like many books in mathematics, this introduction starts from first principles in the topic it's introducing, but assumes some "mathematical sophistication". In this case, it assumes you're comfortable with basic definition-example-theorem style and that you understand the basics of multivariate differential equations. I was a math and computer science undergrad who did much better in abstract algebra and set theory than analysis and diff eqs, but I found this book extremely readable. I couldn't have derived the proofs, but I could follow them because they were written as clearly as anything I've ever read in mathematics. I found the explanation of the central limit theorem and the numerous normal approximation theorems for sampling to be exceptionally clear.

The examples were both illuminating and entertaining. One of the beauties of statistics is that the examples are almost always interesting real-world problems, in this case ranging from biological (e.g. significance testing for cancer clusters) to man-made (e.g. Poisson models of football scoring) to physical (e.g. loaded dice). The examples tied directly to the techniques being explored. The exercises were more exercise-like in this book than in some math books where they're a dumping ground for material that wouldn't fit into the body of the text. This book has clearly been tuned over many years of classroom use with real students.

I read this book because I found I couldn't understand the applied statistics I was reading in machine learning and Bayesian data analysis research papers in my field (computational linguistics). In paticular, I wanted the background to be able to tackle books such as Hastie et al.'s "Elements of Statistical Learning" or Gelman et al.'s "Bayesian Data Analysis", both of which pretty much assume a good grounding in the topics covered in this book by Larsen and make excellent follow-on reading.

A fairly good book but it could be better

I have just finished teaching a year of probability and statistics out of the fourth edition of this text. As I was teaching the course, it became clear just how difficult it is to write a mathematically rigorous undergraduate text in mathematical statistics. I selected this book because it seemed to be the best of the department recommended texts. For example, it is a bit more rigorous than Wackerly, Mendenhall, and SchaefferMathematical Statistics with Applications; significantly more rigorous than DevoreProbability and Statistics for Engineering and the Sciences; and just as rigorous but apparently more popular than Hogg and TannisProbability and Statistical Inference (8th Edition).
The book is readable and well-written and I'll probably use it again if and when I teach the sequence. The authors, as Jay I. Simon pointed out in an earlier review, have a sense of humor. For example, a random walk problem begins with the following sentence: "A somewhat inebriated conventioneer finds himself in the embarrassing predicament of being unable to predetermine whether his next step will be forward or backward." There are several other examples of humor: for example, the authors discuss an airline known as Doomsday Airlines.
The reason that I give the book only four stars is that the rigor is on occasion illusory, as Glitzer pointed out in another review. Here is a chapter-by-chapter review.

Preface: The authors claim that the first 7 chapters can easily be covered in one semester. I don't agree with this statement. We covered the first four chapters and part of the fifth, and very few of my students suggested that I was going slowly.

Chapter 1: This is an historical introduction. I don't know about the accuracy of the history (although I believe that the history is accurate), but the authors tell a good story. The treatment of the golden ratio is problematic, since their definition inverts one of the ratios and so their definition is the reciprocal of the usual golden ratio. This is not that problematic in itself, but the continued fraction representation converges to the usual golden ratio.

Chapter 2: This introduces elementary probability and combinatorics. It is one of the best chapters in the text with excellent examples and a good introduction to the Kolmogorov axiomatic framework which does not get bogged down in measure theoretic details.

Chapter 3: Random variables are introduced in this chapter, the longest in the book. Much of the material is well-done in this chapter, but the introduction of continuous random variables is a mess. They initially define continuous sample spaces to be those that are uncountable blatantly disregarding the possibility of mixed distributions. They then define a continuous real-valued random variable to be a function between two subsets of the real numbers and assert without justification that a probability density function. The `definition' is in any case simultaneously too restrictive (the input space need not be real) and too general (the observation space of a binomial random variable is a subset of the real numbers). In the discussion of the relationship between a cdf and a pdf, the authors blatantly misapply the fundamental theorem of calculus since there is no reason to assume that a pdf is continuous. This disregard of basic regularity issues permeates the chapter, usually without comment from the authors. Although there were other factors (many due to me), the confused treatment of continuous random variables was a contributor to the fact that most of my class never had a clear idea of what a random variable was. However, despite these issues, the chapter is still fairly good. The examples and exercises are well done, and not all of them are routine.

Chapter 4: This chapter is devoted to a discussion of some of the more important distributions. The material is generally of high quality. The central limit theorem is stated and the proof is deferred to an appendix. The appendix starts off by stating that the full proof is beyond the level of the text. While I agree with this, I do not understand why one would devote an appendix to `a proof of the central limit theorem' without giving a proof. This is an example of the illusory nature of the apparent rigor of the text.

Chapter 5: This is a very hard chapter on estimation. The key sections are on maximum likelihood estimators, confidence intervals, unbiasedness, and (perhaps) efficiency. Given the difficulty of the notion of sufficiency, I thought that the authors did an excellent job with it. The optional section on Bayesian estimation is also well done.

Chapter 6: Hypothesis testing is introduced here. The authors routinely state hypotheses tests as theorems starting in this chapter. This seems to be an abuse of the term, and when they `prove' the theorems, they typically show that the hypothesis test is at least approximately a generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT); which is not the same thing at all. Saying that, the basic idea of what an hypothesis test actually is and how to perform one is explained well.

Chapter 7: The basic t and chi-square tests are introduced here. Note that the hypotheses tests, by the time they are actually stated, are pretty obvious which makes it strange that appendices are devoted to their proofs. As noted above, the tests are shown in the appendices to be (at least approximately) GLRTs. I did like the derivation of the various sampling distributions.

Chapter 8: This chapter discusses how to classify data. Although it comes at an appropriate place in the discussion, it might be better to have it earlier so that more students have a chance to consider it in a classroom setting.

Chapter 9: This chapter discusses two-sample data. It's pretty vanilla.

Chapter 10: Here we look at goodness-of-fit tests. The discussion is nice, although I think more attention should have been paid to the categorical distribution rather than simply leaping to the general multinomial distribution.

Chapter 11: At this point, the examples and exercises become much more computationally intensive. For this chapter discusses regression, covariance, and the bivariate normal distribution. I think this is one of the better chapters in the text, although a linear algebraic point of view for the multivariate normal distribution would have made an elegant addition.

Chapter 12: ANOVA is now introduced. Given the complexity of the setup, the authors give a very nice exposition.

We did not have time to discuss chapters 13 (randomized block design) or 14 (non-parametric statistics). My impression is that they are less rigorous but give a good overall view of the basic ideas.

All in all, I would recommend this book to other instructors, and will recommend (actually require) it for future prob/stat students. The book appears to be at about the right level and is superior to the competition. That is despite the confused treatment of continuous random variables and the insistence on stating hypotheses tests as theorems.

About the Author
JOHN MCMURRY, educated at Harvard and Columbia, has taught approximately 17,000 students in general and organic chemistry over a 30-year period. A Professor of Chemistry at Cornell University since 1980, Dr. McMurry previously spent 13 years on the faculty at the University of California at Santa Cruz. He as received numerous awards, including the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship (1969-71), the National Institute of Health Career Development Award (1975-80), the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award (1986-87), and the Max Planck Research Award (1991). ROBERT C. FAY, Professor of Chemistry at Cornell University, has been teaching general and inorganic chemistry at Cornell since 1962. Known for his clear, well-organized lectures, Dr. Fay was the 1980 recipient of the Clark Distinguished Teaching Award. He has also taught as a visiting professor at Harvard University and at the University of Bologna (Italy). A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Oberlin College, Fay received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. He has been an NSF Science Faculty Fellow at the University of East Anglia and the University of Sussex (England) and a NATO/Heineman Senior Fellow at Oxford University.

About the Author

Brian P. Gallagher is the director of ISR Mission Systems Engineering within the ISR Systems Division, Mission Systems Sector, Northrop Grumman, where he is responsible for leading a team of senior engineers with expertise in the discipline of systems engineering and its practical application to large-scale, mission-critical ISR systems. Prior to this position, Brian was director of acquisition support at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) where he was responsible for building teams from across the SEI’s disciplines to support the Department of Defense and other government agency acquisition programs. Brian was previously employed with the Aerospace Corporation where he worked as a software acquisition and engineering advisor for several Air Force and NRO projects. During his Air Force career, he was the deputy chief of Software Engineering with an Air Intelligence Agency remote intelligence site; chief software engineer on the Range Operations Control Center Project at Cape Canaveral AFS, Florida; a software project manager for the Titan IV Program Office; and a software engineer with Strategic Air Command. He received his B.S. in management information systems from Peru State College and his M.S. in computer science/software engineering from Florida Institute of Technology.

 

Mike Phillips is the program manager for CMMI at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI), a position created to lead the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) product suite evolution. He has led the team, which spans government, industry, and the SEI, through three significant upgrades to the original version of the integrated model, which now covers engineering, acquisition, and services. He was previously responsible for Transition Enabling activities at the SEI. He has authored Technical Reports, Technical Notes, CMMI Columns, and various articles in addition to presenting CMMI material at conferences around the world. Prior to his retirement as a colonel from the Air Force, he was the program manager of the $36B development program for the B-2 stealth bomber in the B-2 System Program Office at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. He also has four years of experience guiding acquisition programs in the Pentagon for both the Air Force and the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He holds a B.S. in astronautical engineering from the Air Force Academy, an M.S. in nuclear engineering from Georgia Tech, an M.S. in systems management from the University of Southern California, and an M.S. in international affairs from Salve Regina College and the Naval War College. He is a graduate of the Program Management Course at the Defense Systems Management College and  of the Air Force Test Pilot School.

 

Dr. Karen J. Richter is a research analyst and senior project leader at the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA), a research and development “think tank” for the Department of Defense. She has led numerous projects for the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics (OUSD(AT&L)) in acquisition management; systems and software engineering, integration, and interoperability; system life-cycle process management; integrated product and process development (IPPD) and concurrent engineering; advanced manufacturing practices and virtual enterprises; system quality, reliability, and maintainability; design and manufacturing technology including modeling and simulation; and life-cycle affordability. She also led or participated in projects for the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy (OUSD(P)) and the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Networks and Information Integration (ASD[NII)). She was a member of the development teams for the CMMI SE/SW/IPPD and CMMI-DEV models and co-chair of the development team for CMMI-ACQ. She has served on the CMMI Configuration Control Board and the CMMI Steering Group. She helped develop international standards on life-cycle process management, systems engineering, software engineering, and quality management as a member of both ISO/JTC1/Subcommittee 7 (Software and Systems Engineering) Working Group 7 (Life Cycle Management) and ISO/TC176 (Quality). She taught in the Department of Engineering Mechanics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and in the Departments of Mechanical Engineering at The Ohio State University and the University of Maryland at College Park. She is the coauthor of three college engineering textbooks. She earned a B.A. in mathematics from Knox College and an M.S. and Ph.D. in engineering mechanics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

 

Sandy Shrum is a senior writer/editor and communications point of contact for the Software Engineering Process Management program at the Software Engineering Institute. Besides this book, she has coauthored two other CMMI books: CMMI® for Services: Guidelines for Superior Service (Addison-Wesley, 2010) and two editions of CMMI®: Guidelines for Process Integration and Product Improvement (Addison-Wesley). She has been with the SEI since 1995 and has been a member of the CMMI Development Team since the CMMI project’s inception in 1998. Her roles on the project have included model author, small review team member, reviewer, editor, model development process coordinator, and quality assurance process owner. Before joining the SEI, Sandy worked for eight years as a document developer with Legent Corporation, a Virginia-based software company. Her experience as a technical communicator dates back to 1988, when she earned her M.S. in professional writing from Carnegie Mellon University. Her undergraduate degree, a B.S. in business administration, was earned at Gannon University, Erie, Pennsylvania.

A growing trend in business and government alike is one that has organizations purchasing, outsourcing, and acquiring products and services to deliver or assemble and deliver to their customers. Instead of focusing on the development of products and services, organizations are focusing on acquiring the best products and services developed by other organizations.Because of this new emphasis in organizations, there is a lack of experience to draw on in the organization or even to hire that makes it difficult to be successful in this acquisition environment. The factors to consider are different.

The CMMI ® Product Team and its sponsors acknowledge this trend and have created the CMMI for Acquisition (CMMI-ACQ) model to help these organizations by codifying best practices. These best practices apply to processes critical to the successful acquisition of products and services and cover the important processes involved in an acquisition environment.

What Is CMMI?

CMMI (Capability Maturity Model ® Integration) is the name given to the collection of models that comprise best practices designed to help organizations improve the performance of their processes and the training and appraisals that support these models. A CMMI model documents activities important to different aspects of the processes needed to deliver products and services to a customer. The CMMI model contained in this book, CMMI-ACQ, is a model designed specifically for organizations that acquire products and services, including large complex systems.

The first CMMI model was developed by a product team from industry, government, and the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) for the application of process improvement in the development of products and services.

What Is CMMI for Acquisition?

The CMMI-ACQ model was developed in a slightly different way. The first step was taken by General Motors, in collaboration with the SEI and with approval of the CMMI Sponsors and Steering Group. An author team in its Information Technology department developed the initial draft of the Acquisition model as the special report, Adapting CMMI for Acquisition Organizations: A Preliminary Report. This report was released by the SEI on its website. The CMMI Product Team sought input about this report from organizations that acquire products and services as a major part of the business processes. Organizations were also recruited to pilot this report to see how well it helped those who used it.

In the meantime, the CMMI Product Team formed a model development team that would use the report as a basis to form a CMMI model. Gathering input from those who piloted and reviewed the preliminary report, the CMMI-ACQ development team began work on just that. This team consisted of members from government, industry, and the SEI to ensure a wide variety of perspectives, just as other CMMI model development teams had in the past. This team subsequently created CMMI for Acquisition, Version 1.2 (CMMI-ACQ, V1.2). This model was released in November 2007 as a new member of the CMMI Product Suite and is included in this book with elements we’ve added.

We, as book authors, added tips and hints to all of the model’s process areas to help you apply the practices in your organization. We’ve also added a case study from General Motors that describes how CMMI-ACQ has worked in that organization. Further, we’ve included important information about and for the government’s use of CMMI-ACQ and the government’s special needs.

Purpose

The purpose of this book is to present acquisition best practices by including the full CMMI-ACQ, V1.2 model as well as other information to help you apply these practices in your organization. This other information takes the form of tips, hints, and cross references that supplement the model practices and additional chapters that focus on the needs of industry and government.

The CMMI-ACQ, V1.2 model is a collection of best practices generated from the CMMI V1.2 Architecture and Framework. This collection’s best practices apply to professionals in both government and industry who acquire products and services for their customers and end users.

CMMI-ACQ shares model components with other CMMI models such as the CMMI for Development (CMMI-DEV) and the Software Acquisition Capability Maturity Model (SA-CMM). CMMI-ACQ also incorporates work by several acquisition organizations to adapt the CMMI-DEV model best practices for use in an acquisition organization.

The CMMI-ACQ model provides guidance for those who initiate and manage the acquisition of products and services that meet the needs of the customer and end user. Although suppliers may provide artifacts useful to the processes addressed in CMMI-ACQ, the focus of the model is on the processes of the acquiring organization. CMMI-ACQ integrates bodies of knowledge that are essential to these processes.

The supplier-executed portion of the activities integral to the acquisition of products and services may use the CMMI for Development (CMMI-DEV) model. In cases where the acquirer is also a product or service developer (e.g., taking responsibility for the first few layers of product development and integration), CMMI-DEV (in particular the Requirements Development, Technical Solution, and Product Integration process areas) are useful for improving the acquirer’s product or service development processes.

Contributors to CMMI for Acquisition

Many talented people were involved in the development of the CMMI v1.2 Product Suite, which includes both CMMI for Acquisition and CMMI for Development. Three primary groups involved in this development were the CMMI Steering Group, Product Team, and Configuration Control Board.

The Steering Group approved the architecture for adding additional areas of interest to the CMMI Product Suite by approving the concept of “constellations” built from the CMMI Model Framework (CMF) and CMMI Architecture. A constellation is a collection of components used to construct models, training materials, and appraisal materials in an area of interest (e.g., acquisition and development).

The Steering Group initiated the development of the Acquisition constellation, recognizing the importance of providing best practices to acquirers. The Steering Group provided guidance for the development of the CMMI-ACQ model and its accompanying training materials by guiding and approving plans of the Product Team, providing consultation on significant CMMI project issues, and ensuring involvement from a variety of interested communities.

The Product Team wrote, reviewed, revised, discussed, and agreed on the structure and technical content of the CMMI Product Suite, including the framework, models, training, and appraisal materials. Development activities were based on multiple inputs. These inputs included an A-Specification and guidance specific to each release provided by the Steering Group, source models, change requests received from the user community, and input received from pilots and other stakeholders.

The CMMI Configuration Control Board (CCB) is the official mechanism for controlling changes to CMMI models, the SCAMPI appraisal method, and Introduction to CMMI training. As such, this group ensures integrity over the life of the product suite by reviewing all proposed changes to the baseline and approving only those changes that satisfy identified issues and meet criteria for the upcoming release.

The Acquisition Advisory Board acted as the configuration control board for the Acquisition constellation, approving all changes to the initial draft of the CMMI-ACQ contained in the special report. Consisting of experts in the field of acquisition, this group ensured the integrity of the constellation using the same review process as the CMMI CCB.

Members of the groups involved in developing CMMI-ACQ, V1.2 are listed in Appendix C.

Audience

The audience for CMMI-ACQ is anyone interested in process improvement in an acquisition environment. Whether you are familiar with the concept of Capability Maturity Models or are seeking information to get started on your improvement efforts, CMMI-ACQ will be useful to you. This model is also intended for organizations that want to use a reference model for an appraisal of their acquisition-related processes. 1

Organization of this Book

The organization of the book is similar to the CMMI-ACQ model available on the SEI website. However, we added a few features that are not found in that document:

  • We added tips, hints, and cross-references in the margins throughout the process areas to help you better understand, apply, or find more information about the content of the process areas.
  • We added two additional chapters in Part One. The first, Chapter 6, describes the special needs of government acquisition organizations and how CMMI-ACQ can support improving processes in that environment. The second, Chapter 7, demonstrates how CMMI-ACQ can successfully be applied in industry and the benefits that can result from its use.
  • Process area sections have tabs that help you to quickly open the book to just the spot you need.
  • An index is provided to help you find specific information quickly.

The book is organized into three main parts:

  • Part One—About CMMI for Acquisition
  • Part Two—Generic Goals and Generic Practices, and the Process Areas
  • Part Three—The Appendices and Glossary

Part One, “About CMMI for Acquisition,” consists of seven chapters:

  • Chapter 1, “Introduction,” offers a broad view of CMMI and the Acquisition constellation, concepts of process improvement, the history of models used for process improvement, and different process improvement approaches.
  • Chapter 2, “Process Area Components,” describes all of the components of the CMMI-ACQ process areas.
  • Chapter 3, “Tying It All Together,” assembles the model components and explains the concepts of maturity levels and capability levels.
  • Chapter 4, “Relationships Among Process Areas,” provides insight into the meaning and interactions of the CMMI-ACQ process areas.
  • Chapter 5, “Using CMMI Models,” describes paths to adoption and the use of CMMI-ACQ for process improvement and benchmarking of practices in an acquisition organization.
  • Chapter 6, “Government Acquisition and CMMI” describes the special needs of the government acquisition environment and how CMMI-ACQ provides a helpful tool for improvement.
  • Chapter 7, “General Motors Case Study,” describes the experiences of General Motors as they applied CMMI-ACQ best practices in the organization and the benefits that resulted.

Part Two, “Generic Goals and Generic Practices, and the Process Areas,” contains all of this CMMI model’s required and expected components. It also contains related informative components, including subpractices, notes, examples, and typical work products.

Part Two contains 23 sections. The first section contains the generic goals and practices. The remaining 22 sections each represent one of the CMMI-ACQ process areas. 2 To make these process areas easy to find, they are organized alphabetically by process area acronym and have tabs on the outside edge of the page. Each section contains descriptions of goals, best practices, and examples. Plus, we’ve added tips, hints, and cross-references in the outer margins to help explain concepts and relationships, and to provide other useful information.

Part Three, “The Appendices and Glossary,” consists of four sections:

  • Appendix A, “References,” contains references you can use to locate documented sources of information such as reports, process improvement models, industry standards, and books that are related to CMMI-ACQ.
  • Appendix B, “Acronyms,” defines the acronyms used in the model.
  • Appendix C, “CMMI for Acquisition Project Participants,” contains lists of team members and their organizations who participated in the development of CMMI-ACQ, Version 1.2.
  • Appendix D, “Glossary,” defines many of the terms used in CMMI-ACQ.
How to Use this Book

Whether you are new to process improvement, new to CMMI, or already familiar with CMMI, Part One can help you understand why CMMI-ACQ is the guide to use for improving your acquisition processes.

Readers New to Process Improvement

If you are new to process improvement or new to the Capability Maturity Model (CMM ® ) concept, we suggest that you read Chapter 1, “Introduction,” first. Chapter 1 contains an overview of process improvement that explains what CMMI is all about.

Next, skim Part Two, including generic goals and practices and specific goals and practices, to get a feel for the scope of the best practices contained in the model. Pay close attention to the purpose and introductory notes at the beginning of each process area.

In Part Three, look through the references in Appendix A and select additional sources you think would be beneficial to read before moving forward with using CMMI-ACQ. Read through the acronyms and glossary to become familiar with the language of CMMI. Then, go back and read the details of Part Two, including the tips and hints.

Readers Experienced with Process Improvement

If you are new to CMMI but have experience with other process improvement models, such as the Software Acquisition CMM, you will immediately recognize many similarities in their structure and content.

We recommend that you read Part One to understand how CMMI is different from other process improvement models. If you have experience with other models, you may want to select which sections to read first. Read Part Two with an eye for best practices you recognize from the models that you have already used. By identifying familiar material, you will gain an understanding of what is new and what has been carried over, or is familiar from the models you already know. Review the tips, hints, and cross-references to see details and relationships that will help you understand CMMI better.

Next, review the glossary to understand how some terminology may differ from that used in the process improvement models you know. Many concepts are repeated, but they may be called something different.

Readers Familiar with CMMI

If you have reviewed or used a CMMI model before, you will quickly recognize the CMMI concepts discussed and the best practices presented. Focus in on the tips, hints, and cross-references in the process areas to discover new ideas, relationships, or details you may have missed before.

1. An appraisal is an examination of one or more processes by a trained team of professionals using a reference model (e.g., CMMI-ACQ) as the basis for determining strengths and weaknesses.
2. A process area is a cluster of related best practices in an area, which when implemented collectively, satisfies a set of goals considered important for making significant improvement in that area. This concept is covered in detail in Chapter 2.

This official review is a must for a deep model understanding

This is the official guide to the ACQ constellation so it's a must.

Beyond that, it include very useful comments and tips, although do not forget it, it's a reference book which the authors tried to make easier to read and practical.

If you are going to work with Project Management Offices on environments where the projects are usually outsourced, a formal or unformal CMMI-ACQ implementation is a very good idea.

A good model for Acquisition

The hardcopy of the model, in my opinion, is much better than the soft copy (which I use as well for quick searches) because you have all of the tips and hints in the hardcopy.

A lot of companies use the CMMI-DEV when they should be using the CMMI-ACQ (government especially).

The front and back inside cover has the Process Areas listed in the center of the page which I would have liked to have on the sides (like the CMMI-DEV) because I write a lot of notes / lessons learned in this space. However, the book has a few blank pages in the back that can be used for this purpose. One item that I found is extremely helpful is to matrix the PA SPs to all of the related process areas and this usually takes up at least three pages.

For those used to the CMMI-DEV model, this model has 22 PAs with many reflecting the same PAs as the CMMI-DEV. Five PAs do not really map over to the CMMI-DEV since they deal with either supplier management or acquisition of products.

The elaboration for the PAs to the Generic Goals & Generic Practices are short compared to the CMMI-DEV model.

Overall, a good model for a company that employs contractors to perform software development work.
