About the Author
For Elaine N. Marieb, R.N., Ph.D., taking the needs of nursing and other allied health students into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. This experience, along with continual feedback from health care professionals (including generations of former students taught by Dr. Marieb), has inspired the unique perspective and accessibility for which this book is known.
Dr. Marieb’s commitment to students extends beyond teaching and writing. Recognizing the challenges students face, Dr. Marieb contributes to the New Directions Program at Holyoke Community College by funding a staffed drop-in center and by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women who are returning to college after a hiatus or attending college for the first time. She also funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College (which promotes research by undergraduate science majors) and has underwritten renovation and updating of one of the biology labs in Mount Holyoke's Clapp Laboratory. Recognizing the severe national shortage of nursing faculty, Dr. Marieb also underwrites the Nursing Scholars of the Future Grant Program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.
Dr. Marieb is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology® CD-ROM series. This text–Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory Manual, Fifth Edition–is the latest expression of her commitment to the needs of the students pursuing the study of A&P.
When not involved in academic pursuits, Dr. Marieb is a world traveler and has vowed to visit every country on this planet. Shorter term, she serves on the board of directors of the famed Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and on the scholarship committee of the Women’s Resources Center of Sarasota County. She is an enthusiastic supporter of the local arts and enjoys a competitive match of doubles tennis.

Never buy this!

I thought buying his book on my iPad Kindle app, would be cool. I thought how convenient not to have to lug yet another text book around with me. And I may have been right, but this particular book is a workbook and I'll never buy another workbook in Kindle format again. Kindle doesn't recognize the difference between workbooks and other books and it is not possible to print from this document; something I didn't realize until it was too late to return it.
I love having a kindle and I read books on it for leisure frequently, but I will never again buy a Kindle workbook and wish I had not purchased this one!

Very helpful laboratory manual

I had to buy this lab manual for my entry Anatomy & Physiology class. This laboratory manual explains concepts in a highly detailed yet direct manner. There are very helpful activities in this manual that will be quite useful when it comes down to studying. The tables, charts, and pictures within this manual are very to-the-point (they beat the actual bush instead of AROUND the bush).
I personally wouldn't recommend buying this in a kindle format if you are going to be using this in most laboratory room settings, as this is a LAB MANUAL. Please think about that before buying this. This is a highly recommended buy coming from a college student who has taken multiple biology classes!
EDIT: As another reviewer said, it would be helpful if this manual came with colored pictures instead of black and white. Apparently some versions have colored pictures (students who bought from the school bookstore got colored pictures apparently!), although this would not be known unless the seller specifies this fact in their description of this product.

Just Torrent the 5th Edition Online

Yes, it's true. The 5th edition is floating somewhere online for free. I ordered the 6th edition from my college bookstore, and after discovering the 5th edition online, I immediately returned the book. The 5th and 6th editions are EXACTLY THE SAME! Trust me, nothing is different between the two except a couple updated anatomy diagrams. Nothing special or significant at all. I really hate when authors do this. It's such a money-making scheme that I'm so sick and tired of seeing this happen to the students. If you're going to update a book, completely rearrange the whole thing. Add a ton of different photos, add different text, whatever. Please don't update a book every 2 or 3 years when you don't need to, and in anatomy (which NEVER changes, and probably won't change unless humans become subject to massive nuclear fallout), you don't need this kind of updating at all.
Every word in the 6th edition, down to the exercises and pre-lab questions, are exactly alike. Believe me, I had the PDF 5th edition open on my computer and the 6th edition open on my desk. After performing a rigorous comparative analysis, they're 98.9% alike (the difference being only with a few updated anatomy photos, and I mean a FEW). Even my anatomy professor said it was ok to use the 5th edition, although (in her words) "you might want to see more updated pictures". In other words, the 5th edition is just fine.
Students, you need to rise up and take back the education that's rightfully yours. Please take full advantage of this millennium's e-book craze, because that's what's leading to torrenting. This is the only method whereby students can possibly fight back against ever-increasing textbook prices.
