About the Author

Elaine Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience, along with stories from the field–including those of former students now in health careers–that has informed the development of the unique perspective and the accessibility for which her texts and laboratory manuals are known.

In her ongoing commitment to students and her realization of the challenges they face, Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women returning to college after a hiatus or who are attending college for the first time and would otherwise be unable to continue with their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and generously contributed to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory that bears her name.

In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology® CD-ROM series, and is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and Sigma Xi.

Patricia Brady Wilhelm received her Ph.D. in Biological and Medical Sciences from Brown University and is currently Professor of Biology at the Community College of Rhode Island. She has been teaching anatomy to undergraduates for more than 12 years at Brown University, Rhode Island College, and the community College of Rhode Island. In 1991 she received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching from Brown University.

Continuing to strive for excellence in teaching and learning, Dr. Wilhelm has been a leader at the Community College of Rhode Island in the uses of technology for teaching through the development of web-based course tools, on-line dissection videos, on-line student assessment tools, and cooperative learning strategies for the classroom. The driving factor behind these innovations is the desire to aid student learning by making course materials accessible and to make the study of anatomy an active and interactive process. She has also served as a consultant in training faculty from all three public institutions in Rhode Island (University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, and the Community College of Rhode Island) in the uses of technology in teaching, and continues to work on the development and use of multimedia tools for anatomy instruction.

In addition to teaching, Dr. Wilhelm has contributed to numerous anatomy and physiology publications. Dr. Wilhelm’s research interests are: vertebrate functional morphology, biomehanics, and anatomy education. She is a member of Sigma Xi, the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), and the American Association of Anatomists.

Jon Mallatt earned his Ph.D. in Anatomy from the University of Chicago. Dr. Mallatt is currently an Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at Washington State University, where he has been teaching human anatomy to undergraduates of all backgrounds for 24 years. He is also a member of the department of Basic Medical Sciences, where he teaches courses in Histology and Anatomy of the Trunk in the WWAMI Medical Program. WWAMI honored him with their "Excellence in Teaching Award" in 1992, 1993, 1995, and 2000. Additionally Dr. Mallatt holds a position as adjunct Associate Professor in the department of Biological Structure at the University of Washington. His particular areas of expertise in the study of anatomy are histology, comparative anatomy, and anatomical drawing, although his research now focuses on the origin of vertebrate animals and molecular phylogeny. Dr. Mallatt is an accomplished researcher with 39 publications in the fields of anatomy and molecular phylogeny to his credit.

One of my favorite school books (if that's possible)
By S. Richards
I can't tell you how sad I was when I found out that the City Colleges of Chicago decided to use Principles of Anatomy and Physiology by Tortora and Derrickson for the second course of Anatomy and Physiology instead of this book. This book does a great job of putting the subjects in an order that is good to follow, with a plethora of great photos and drawings, and puts a section called Homeostatic Imbalance right after a section and explains some problems that go wrong in the part of the human body. Most chapters even have a closer look section with a rather corny title that they think is funny with an article that is usually topical and relevant. Really go above and beyond in muscle and bone chapters (giving you both a detailed drawing and actual picture of almost everything). Also, wrote in a style that is easy to understand; goes from the basics to the details of a subject very smoothly. Even my girlfriend, who has no interest in a career in the medical world, has flipped through most of the book and asked questions or stated how awesome something is. I plan on keeping this book to reference to for a long time.

The Mercedes of Undergraduate A&P Books
By Groovy Vegan
I used this book as a student, and refer to it frequently as a reference. This 1000 + page text explains the structure and function of the complicated, detailed human body in a logical, easy to understand manner. Everything about this book is user friendly including the presentation order, the writing, and the graphics. In each chapter, Marieb presents the big picture before zeroing in on the details. For the body's systems, (digestive, endocrine, respiratory, etc.) Marieb overviews the system, and then explains the gross and fine anatomy and associated physiology.
Here are a few of the many features I find impressive: * Graphics: Very impressive photographs and illustrations. The electron micrographs are spectacular. * Tables and charts - These greatly simplify the learning of complex concepts. For example, in the immune system chapter, there's a good table explaining the first and second lines of defense. * Medical applications - Common diseases are overviewed in the appropriate chapter, for example epilepsy is discussed in the neural integration chapter. There are occasional basic pharmacology and sports applications, such as diuretics and blood doping, respectively. * Making connections feature - Marieb shows how the system being studied relates to the other systems in the body.
This is an absolutely state of the art A&P book, and each edition is better than the last. It's expensive, but you get a lot for your money. It may be too detailed for some, who would be better served by her "Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology" text. If you're an A&P student, I recommended you use her workbook as well. I've found that working through the exercises really helps this information stick.

Informative and highly understandable textbook
By A Customer
This book filled with great informative pictures and information that makes any college A and P student's life a lot easier. I used this book for anatomy and physiology class I and II. The book is easy to read and it is a powersource of knowledge. The book is not tedious nor boring to read. In fact, it is quite interesting and was a pleasure studying from. If you want to know the type of questions asked on college anatomy and physiology exams, get the following which is also on amazon:
Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations
Volume 1 (ISBN: 0971999619)
Volume 2 (ISBN: 0971999627)
I used these three books and got an A-.

The Adobe Photoshop CS5 Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter), by Scott Kelby

Are you ready for an amazing new version of The Photoshop Book that breaks all the rules? Scott Kelby, Editor and Publisher of Photoshop User magazine—and the best-selling Photoshop author in the world today—once again takes this book to a whole new level as he uncovers more of the latest, most important, and most useful new Adobe Photoshop CS5 techniques for digital photographers.

This major update to his award-winning, record-breaking book does something for digital photographers that’s never been done before—it cuts through the bull and shows you exactly “how to do it.” It’s not a bunch of theory; it doesn’t challenge you to come up with your own settings or figure it out on your own. Instead, Scott shows you step by step the exact techniques used by today’s cutting-edge digital photographers, and best of all, he shows you flat-out exactly which settings to use, when to use them, and why. That’s why the previous editions of this book are widely used as the official study guide in photography courses at colleges and universities around the world.

Each year, Scott trains thousands of professional photographers how to use Photoshop, and almost without exception they have the same questions, the same problems, and the same challenges—and that’s exactly what he covers in this book. You’ll learn:

  • The sharpening techniques the pros really use.
  • The pros’ tricks for fixing the most common digital photo problems fast!
  • The step-by-step setup for getting what comes out of your printer to match exactly what you see onscreen.
  • A whole chapter on how to process HDR (High Dynamic Range) images using CS5’s new Merge to HDR Pro.
  • How to master CS5’s new Content-Aware Fill.
  • How to color correct any photo without breaking a sweat.
  • How to process RAW images like a pro (plus how to take advantage of all the new Camera Raw features in CS5!).
  • How to use the included gray card to make color correction just a matter of three clicks.
  • How to show your work like a pro!
  • A host of shortcuts, workarounds, and slick “insider” tricks to send your productivity through the roof!
Plus, Scott includes a special bonus chapter with his own CS5 workflow, from start to finish, and each chapter ends with a Photoshop Killer Tips section, packed with time-saving, job-saving tips that make all the difference. If you’re a digital photographer, and if you’re ready to learn all the “tricks of the trade”—the same ones that today’s leading pros use to correct, edit, sharpen, retouch, and present their work—then you’re holding the book that will do just that.

The Mother of all things Photoshop!!!!!
By Eldonaldo
I'm not new to photography, but I'm fairly new to Photoshop...CS5 in particular. In the interest of quickly getting up-to-speed, I signed up a few weeks ago with an Adobe Certified Instructor to provide personal Photoshop mentoring to me on a once-a-week basis. To supplement these sessions, I also joined NAPP and have watched dozens of their video tutorials; Adobe TV, etc. At the same time, I also picked up another highly respected author's book on CS5 (lets call it the "me" book) to try and put things together. The videos have helped, but I must candidly say that I quickly got lost in complexities of the writing in the "me" book and found it quite frustrating to say the least! Thats not to say that the "me" book isn't well done, but it is clearly written for someone that has had a fair amount of Photoshop experience in the past. IMHO, it's just way too detailed for the neophite user.
Then WOW...fast forward to Scott's new book which arrived at my home earlier this week. What an amazing book this is indeed. BANG...just open up to any Chapter and there you have a very straightforward, concise, step-by-step tutorial to guide and fast-track even the most inexperienced user through the process of getting the very best results out of his or her images. Photoshop frustration has been replaced with Photoshop fun. Trust me, using this book is like having Scott looking over you shoulder as you go through his easy-to-follow methodology. Even the complete novice can process some amazing images the very first time through.
Without reservation, I highly recommend you BUY THIS BOOK!!! Thanks, Scott, I'm having an absolute blast.

My Favorite Photoshop Resource
By Thom Mitchell
Scott Kelby keeps writing great books about Photoshop and somehow he makes each new book about the newest release of Adobe Photoshop better than the last. This book is no exception. Whether you are brand new to Photoshop or have been using it since Photoshop 2.0, like I have, you can quickly pick up the book and in a matter of minutes put to use some new technique or learn a new and better (i.e. faster and simpler) way of doing things. If you are a Photoshop user this book is a must have reference to have by your side.

What make Kelby's writing so effective is that he clearly walks you through each step of the process with photos, menus and directions - including before and after photos. His discussion of Camera Raw both basic and advanced is especially useful. His chapter on B&W is awesome. (I'm a former photojournalist with a predilection for Black & White images). But the chapter I refer to over and over, is the common problems chapter. He covers all of the ways to help you improve common image problems - backlit, removing reflections, group photos, and many more. Also not to be missed is his Photoshop Killer Tips section at the end of each chapter. If you are a photographer and a Photoshop user you won't be disappointed with this book.

Great--but not if you have the last edition
By Jackustus
I'm a big fan of Scott's books--so clear, practical, and fun to look at. I loved his previous version for CS4. However, this book is virtually identical, with the exception of some material on CS5's excellent new features, such Content Aware Fill. But these are easy to learn from Adobe's online video tutorials. If you already have this book for CS4, there's no reason to get this version. But if you don't have the last edition, you're in for a treat. I heartily recommend it!

Solid book for learning MonoTouch
By Amazon Customer
I have been developing with MonoTouch for about a year and have looked through a lot of material on using it to make effective apps for the iPhone. One of the issues that are now being corrected is access to good learning resources on the MonoTouch tool and how it can be used. There are a few gotcha's using MonoTouch that you find out normally through a collection of web sites, code samples and the like and it is difficult to find them in one place.

Learning MonoTouch does a good job of collecting a lot of this knowledge together. Even after a year of MonoTouch and ten years of C#, there were good things that I found in the book that made a good difference to the stability of the app.

Michael does a good job of describing how to use the tools and explain how the C# interfaces with the Cocoa libraries on iOS effectively and some of the problems you come across and how to correct them. The tip about the NSAutoReleasePool with threads was some very welcome knowledge. I also liked his writings on custom UIViews. The code samples were quite elegant, used code instead of interface builder and explained it quite well. There is a good job outlining the core classes and UITableViewController. Good examples that are well documented.

The best chapters I found were on the Graphics and Animation and MapKit. I have all the other MonoTouch books and none of them explain how Core Graphics and Core animation work as well as this book. The examples here are extensive and have allowed me to do much more a lot quicker. The MapKit examples are also of a very high quality and the map annotations and region detection examples are good
quality.

The only downsides that I can think of the book is that many of the examples are done using the Interface Builder from XCode 3. Apple has XCode 4 and some examples of Storyboards would have been helpful. The two other things I would have like to have seen was an example of in-app purchasing and push notifications. These are hardly documented anywhere and I think they would have been just as relevant as the GameKit, probably more so. These may be more advanced topics, but I think these chapters would have rounded the book out nicely.

Overall a good book, and as its name suggests it's a `Learning' book, so it meets its objectives. If you get through this book, you should be able to work out the other things you need.

Good book with good and detailed code samples
By Andrey Baskov
We are working on a number of Monotouch projects and one thing I should say is that finding a good book describing monotouch framework is pretty hard thing.
In first chapters you will find Monotouch basics and tools and instruments you will need to use it. Next goes basic classes and iOS ideas that you will need.
One thing to note is that there are very detailed source samples and step by step instructions which help newcomers a lot. Every sample covers some real work task, so this book could be also considered as a cookbook for monotouch projects.
It would be better if Michael would add some information about using new XCode version 4 along with new Monodevelope 2.8. Right now this book covers only previous versions of this instruments.
But in general it's a pretty good tutorial I would recommend everyone who wants to start using C# on iOS.

Picked up this book based on the all 5-star reviews. Sadly the code formatting on the kindle is horrible, especially the objective-c examples.

The Unified Modeling Language Reference Manual, (paperback) (2nd Edition), by James Rumbaugh, Ivar Jacobson, Grady Booch

“If you are a serious user of UML, there is no other book quite like this one. I have been involved with the UML specification process for some time, but I still found myself learning things while reading through this book–especially on the changes and new capabilities that have come with UML.”

–Ed Seidewitz, Chief Architect, IntelliData Technologies Corporation

The latest version of the Unified Modeling Language–UML 2.0–has increased its capabilities as the standard notation for modeling software-intensive systems. Like most standards documents, however, the official UML specification is difficult to read and navigate. In addition, UML 2.0 is far more complex than previous versions, making a thorough reference book more essential than ever.

In this significantly updated and expanded edition of the definitive reference to the standard, James Rumbaugh, Ivar Jacobson, and Grady Booch–the UML’s creators–clearly and completely describe UML concepts, including major revisions to sequence diagrams, activity models, state machines, components, internal structure of classes and components, and profiles. Whether you are capturing requirements, developing software architectures, designing implementations, or trying to understand existing systems, this is the book for you.

Highlights include:

  • Alphabetical dictionary of articles covering every UML concept
  • Integrated summary of UML concepts by diagram type
  • Two-color diagrams with extensive annotations in blue
  • Thorough coverage of both semantics and notation, separated in each article for easy reference
  • Further explanations of concepts whose meaning or purpose is obscure in the original specifications
  • Discussion sections offering usage advice and additional insight into tricky concepts
  • Notation summary, with references to individual articles
  • An enhanced online index available on the book’s web site allowing readers to quickly and easily search the entire text for specific topics

The result is an indispensable resource for anyone who needs to understand the inner workings of the industry standard modeling language.

Amazon.com Review
Written by the three pioneers behind the Unified Modeling Language (UML) standard, The Unified Modeling Language Reference Manual provides an excellent real-world guide to working with UML. This title provides expert knowledge on all facets of today's UML standard, helping developers who are encountering UML on the job for the first time to be more productive.

The book begins with a history of UML, from structured design methods of the '60s and '70s to the competing object-oriented design standards that were unified in 1997 to create UML. For the novice, the authors illustrate key diagram types such as class, use case, state machine, activity, and implementation. (Of course, learning these basic diagram types is what UML is all about. The authors use an easy-to-understand ticket-booking system for many of their examples.)

After a tour of basic document types, The Unified Modeling Language Reference Manual provides an alphabetical listing of more than 350 UML terms. Entries range from a sentence or two to several pages in length. (Class, operation, and use case are just a few of the important terms that are covered.) Though you will certainly need to be acquainted with software engineering principles, this reference will serve the working software developer well. As the authors note, this isn't UML for Dummies, but neither is it an arcane academic treatise. The authors succeed in delivering a readable reference that will answer any UML question, no matter how common or obscure. --Richard Dragan

From the Inside Flap
Goals

This book is intended to be a complete and useful reference to the Unified Modeling Language (UML) for the developer, architect, project manager, system engineer, programmer, analyst, contracting officer, customer, and anyone else who needs to specify, design, build, or understand complex software systems. It provides a full reference to the concepts and constructs of UML, including their semantics, syntax, notation, and purpose. It is organized to be a convenient but thorough reference for the working professional developer. It also attempts to provide additional detail about issues that may not be clear from the standard documents and to provide a rationale for many decisions that went into the UML.

This book is not intended as a guide to the UML standards documents or to the internal structure of the metamodel contained in them. The details of the metamodel are of interest to methodologists and UML tool builders, but most other developers have little need for the arcane details of the Object Management Group (OMG) documents. This book provides all the details of UML that most developers need; in many cases, it makes information explicit that must otherwise be sought between the lines of the original documents. For those who do wish to consult the source documents, they are included on the accompanying CD.

This book is intended as a reference for those who already have some understanding of object-oriented technology. For beginners, the original books by us and by other authors are listed in the bibliography; although some of the notation has changed, books such as Rumbaugh-91, Booch-94, Jacobson-92, and Meyer-88 provide an introduction to object-oriented concepts that is still valid and therefore unnecessary to duplicate here. For a tutorial introduction to UML that shows how to model a number of common problems, see The Unified Modeling Language User Guide Booch-99. Those who already know an object-oriented method, such as OMT, Booch, Objectory, Coad-Yourdon, or Fusion, should be able to read the Reference Manual and use it to understand UML notation and semantics; to learn UML quickly, they may nevertheless find it useful to read the User Guide.

UML does not require a particular development process, and this book does not describe one. Although UML may be used with a variety of development processes, it was designed to support an iterative, incremental, use-casendriven process with a strong architectural focus--the kind we feel is most suitable for the development of modern, complex systems. The Unified Software Development Process Jacobson-99 describes the kind of process we believe complements the UML and best supports software development. Outline of the Book

The UML Reference Manual is organized into three parts: an overview of UML history and of modeling, a survey of UML concepts, and an alphabetical encyclopedia of UML terms and concepts.

The first part is a survey of UML--its history, purposes, and uses--to help you understand the origin of UML and the need it tries to fill.

The second part is a brief survey of UML views so that you can put all the concepts into perspective. The survey provides a brief overview of the views UML supports and shows how the various constructs work together. This part begins with an example that walks through various UML views and then contains one chapter for each kind of UML view. This survey is not intended as a full tutorial or as a comprehensive description of concepts. It serves mainly to summarize and relate the various UML concepts and provides starting points for detailed readings in the encyclopedia.

The third part contains the reference material organized for easy access to each topic. The bulk of the book is an alphabetical encyclopedia of all of the concepts and constructs in UML. Each UML term of any importance has its own entry in the encyclopedia. The encyclopedia is meant to be complete; therefore, everything in the concept overview in Part 2 is repeated in more detail in the encyclopedia. The same or similar information has sometimes been included in multiple encyclopedia articles so that the reader can conveniently find it.

The reference part also contains an alphabetic list of UML standard elements. A standard element is a feature predefined using the UML extensibility mechanisms. The standard elements are extensions that are felt to be widely useful.

Appendices show the UML metamodel, a summary of UML notation, and some standard sets of extensions for particular domains. There is a brief bibliography of major object-oriented books, but no attempt has been made to include a comprehensive citation of sources of ideas for UML or other approaches. Many of the books in the bibliography contain excellent lists of references to books and journal articles for those interested in tracking the development of the ideas. Encyclopedia Article Formatting Conventions

The encyclopedia part of the book is organized as an alphabetical list of entries, each describing one concept in some detail. The articles represent a flat list of UML concepts at various conceptual levels. A high-level concept typically contains a summary of its subordinate concepts, each of which is fully described in a separate article. The articles are highly cross-referenced. This flat encyclopedia organization permits the description of each concept to be presented at a fairly uniform level of detail, without constant shifts in level for the nested descriptions that would be necessary for a sequential presentation. The hypertext format of the document should also make it convenient for reference. It should not be necessary to use the index much; instead go directly to the main article in the encyclopedia for any term of interest and follow cross-references. This format is not necessarily ideal for learning the language; beginners are advised to read the overview description of UML found in Part 2 or to read introductory books on UML, such as the UML User Guide Booch-99.

Encyclopedic articles have the following divisions, although not all divisions appear in all articles. Brief definition

The name of the concept appears in boldface, set to the left of the body of the article. A brief definition follows in normal type. This definition is intended to capture the main idea of the concept, but it may simplify the concept for concise presentation. Refer to the main article for precise semantics. Semantics

This section contains a detailed description of the meaning of the concept, including constraints on its uses and its execution consequences. Notation is not covered in this section, although examples use the appropriate notation. General semantics are given first. For concepts with subordinate structural properties, a list of the properties follows the general semantics, often under the subheading Structure. In most cases, the properties appear as a table in alphabetical order by property name, with the description of each property on the right. If a property has a brief enumerated list of choices, they may be given as an indented sublist. In more complicated cases, the property is given its own article to avoid excessive nesting. When properties require more explanation than permitted by a table, they are described in normal text with run-in headers in boldface italics. In certain cases, the main concept is best described under several logical subdivisions rather than one list. In such cases, additional sections follow or replace the Structure subsection. Although several organizational mechanisms have been used, their structure should be obvious to the reader. Notation

This section contains a detailed description of the notation for the concept. Usually, the notation section has a form that parallels the preceding semantics section, which it references, and it often has the same divisions. The notation section usually includes one or more diagrams to illustrate the concept. The actual notation is printed in black ink. To help the reader understand the notation, many diagrams contain annotations in blue ink. Any material in blue is commentary and is not part of the actual notation. Example

This subsection contains examples of notation or illustrations of the use of the concept. Frequently, the examples also treat complicated or potentially confusing situations. Discussion

This section describes subtle issues, clarifies tricky and frequently confused points, and contains other details that would otherwise digress from the more descriptive semantics section. A minority of articles have a discussion section.

This section also explains certain design decisions that were made in the development of the UML, particularly those that may appear counterintuitive or that have provoked strong controversy. Only a fraction of articles have this section. Simple differences in taste are generally not covered. Standard elements

This section lists standard constraints, tags, stereotypes, and other conventions that are predefined for the concept in the article. This section is fairly rare. Syntax Conventions

Syntax expressions. Syntax expressions are given in a modified BNF format in a sans serif font. To avoid confusing literal values and syntax productions, literal values that appear in the target sentence are printed in black ink, and the names of syntax variables and special syntax operators are printed in blue ink.

Text printed in black ink appears in that form in the target string.

Punctuation marks (they are always printed in black) appear in the target string.

Any word printed in blue ink represents a variable that must be replaced by another string or another syntax production in the target string. Words may contain letters and hyphens. If a blue word is italicized or underlined, the actual replacement string must be italicized or underlined.

In code examples, comments are printed in blue ink to the right of the code text. Subscripts and overbars are used as syntax operators (please refer to book for further information).

Literal strings. In running text, language keywords, names of model elements, and sample strings from models are shown in a sans serif font.

Diagrams. In diagrams, blue text and arrows are annotations, that is, explanations of the diagram notation that do not appear in an actual diagram. Any text and symbols in black ink are actual diagram notation. CD

This book is accompanied by a CD containing the full text of the book in Adobe Reader (PDF) format. Using Adobe Reader, the viewer can easily search the book for a word or phrase. The CD version also contains a clickable table of contents, index, Adobe Reader thumbnails, and extensive hot links in the body of the articles. Simply click on one of the links to jump to the encyclopedia article for the word or phrase.

The CD also contains the full text of the OMG UML specifications, included by the permission of the Object Management Group.

We feel that this CD will be a useful on-line reference to UML for advanced users. For More Information

Additional source files and up-to-date information on further work on UML and related topics can be found on the World Wide Web sites rational and omg. Acknowledgments

We want to thank many people who made the UML possible. First, we must thank Rational Software Corporation, especially Mike Devlin and Paul Levy, who had the vision to bring us together, start the unification work, and stay the course during the four years that were required to bring the work to successful completion. We also thank the Object Management Group for providing the framework that brought together many diverse viewpoints and merged them together into a broad consensus that was much greater than any one contribution.

We particularly want to thank Cris Kobryn, who led the technical team that prepared the UML standard and who managed to achieve a consensus among an extremely strong-willed group of persons (and the three of us were not the least of his problems). His diplomatic skills and technical balance kept the UML effort from foundering amid many differences of opinion. Cris also reviewed the book and provided countless useful suggestions.

We would like to thank Gunnar Övergaard for reviewing the book thoroughly, as well as for his perseverance in completing many sections of the UML documents that were not fun to write but were necessary to its formal correctness.

We want to thank Karin Palmkvist for an exceedingly thorough review that uncovered many bugs in technical content, as well as many flaws in grammar, phrasing, and presentation.

We would also like to thank Mike Blaha, Conrad Bock, Perry Cole, Bruce Douglass, Martin Fowler, Eran Gery, Pete McBreen, Guus Ramackers, Tom Schultz, Ed Seidewitz, and Bran Selic for their helpful reviews.

Most of all, we want to thank the scores or even hundreds of persons who contributed to the community of ideas from which UML was drawn--ideas in object-oriented technology, software methodology, programming languages, user interfaces, visual programming, and numerous other areas of computer science. It is impossible to list them all, or indeed to track even the major chains of influence, without a major scholarly effort, and this is an engineering book, not a historical review. Many are well known, but many good ideas came from those who did not have the good fortune to be widely recognized.

On a more personal note, I wish to thank Professor Jack Dennis, who inspired my work in modeling and the work of many other students, more than twenty-five years ago. The ideas from his Computations Structures Group at MIT have borne much fruit, and they are not the least of the sources of UML. I must also thank Mary Loomis and Ashwin Shah, with whom I developed the original ideas of OMT, and my former colleagues at GE R&D Center, Mike Blaha, Bill Premerlani, Fred Eddy, and Bill Lorensen, with whom I wrote the OMT book.

Finally, without the patience of my wife, Madeline, and my sons, Nick and Alex, there would have been no UML and no book about it. James Rumbaugh

Solid reference source
By Martin Fowler
Let's be clear - this book is a reference manual, not a tutorial. Don't use this book to learn what the UML is all about. But when you want to answer a question about how to show something or what something means, then this book is invaluable. It's my first reference choice because, unlike the specification, it is written with explanation in mind. I turn to it more than any other UML book and so far I've found that when this can't answer my question, it's because the UML designers haven't thought about it yet.
So to sum up: if you use the UML seriously, make sure you have a copy handy.

Power UML developer's companion
By Daniel Moth
This book is by no means an introductory text. It assumes you already know UML. I do not think it would be of any value to managers or students. It is also of little value to developers that are happy downloading the 808 page UML specification and crunching through it. For the power UML engineer that needs to refer to the UML constructs, elements and semantics and discover new ones quickly when designing systems, this book will come in very handy indeed. Unlike other (valuable) UML books, this one will come down from the bookshelf often.

Accurate, complete (for UML 1.*); not for UML beginners
By Daniel Duffy
This book is one in a series of three by the three amigos. It is certainly the most authoritative and accurate of all three (the other two being very fuzzy in places). The book consists of the following major sections:
I: Background (some history) II: UML concepts (static, use case, statechart and other 'views') III: Reference
This book is pure syntax and can answer most of the questions that you might have about UML syntax. However, this book is not for beginners because it assumes (in my opinion) that you have applied UML to real-life situations. I find the book to be well-written (even if it is fairly dry) and compares favouably with other books in the UML series. There are different ways that you can use this book. First, you can consult it to check of you are using the correct UML syntax in your applications. Second, you can use it to deteremine what you have still to learn in UML (for example, activity diagrams, statecharts). This book should complement the other, more application-specific UML books. For example, it could be seen as a follow-up of Fowler's somewhat outdated UML Primer.
It would have been a good idea if the authors had included a complete test case showing how all the specific 'views' are documented and how they fit together. UML has about 11 different views and which one to use and when will be a major undertaking if you are embarking on a first project.

Really valuable book for app store shoppers.
By oldbeamer
Although I love the iTunes App Store it's heavily weighted towards what's new and popular right now.

It's easy for good apps to get lost in the constant stream of new apps, note I said 'new', not 'better'.

What Glenn has done is gone through each category and picked out the best of the best. If you're have are new to the iPhone or iPad this is an indispensable book. It will save you money and more importantly, time. It's also a great way to find out about everything your device can do.

Excellent guide to the best of the App Store
By A. C. Friedman
The App Store has (by my rough estimation) eleven billion apps for the iPhone and iPad. Glenn's approach of highlighting only those that truly exemplify excellence is brilliant. I found numerous gems that I hadn't yet seen. And it's a testament to the author that, because of how well-crafted I found his write-ups, I enjoyed reading his analyses of apps that I already own and love, just to get his take (and tips!).

Thanks for simplifying such a vast array of choices!

What a great collection of reviews! Some of the apps I already know and love but others were news to me. There seems to be so much out there and sifting through all the information takes way too much time. Thanks for the Cliff Notes version! (Am I dating myself?!) Great job!

Almost without realizing it, we have shifted toward an all-digital culture. Future heirlooms like family photos, home movies, and personal letters now exist only in digital form, and in many cases they are stored using popular services like Flickr, YouTube, and Gmail. These digital possessions form a rich collection that chronicles our lives and connects us to each other.

But have you considered what will happen to your treasured digital possessions when you die?

Unfortunately the answer isn't as certain as we might presume. There are numerous legal, cultural, and technical issues that could prevent access to these assets, and if you don't take steps to make them available to your heirs, your digital legacy could be lost forever.

Written by the creators of TheDigitalBeyond.com, this book helps you secure your valuable digital assets for your loved ones and perhaps posterity. Whether you're the casual email user or the hyper-connected digital dweller, you'll come away with peace of mind knowing that your digital heirlooms won't be lost in the shuffle.

About the Author
Since 2008, John Romano and Evan Carroll have researched and wrote about the budding digital afterlife community. They first presented their research to a crowded room at the South By Southwest conference (SXSW) in 2009, and were immediately mentioned on NPR's "All Tech Considered".
John and Evan then created The Digital Beyond--thedigitalbeyond.com--as a think tank for digital death and legacy issues. The site has grown into the go-to source for digital afterlife information. The New York Times, Obit magazine, Orlando Sentinel, and The Austin Chronicle have mentioned The Digital Beyond and have consulted John and Evan on related stories. In November 2009, they appeared on CNN in a featured video story, "Planning Your Digital Afterlife." They returned to SXSW in 2010 to host another session called "Become Immortal: Understanding the Digital Afterlife."

An aspect of your "estate" that most people haven't considered...
By Thomas Duff
So what happens to your digital self when you die? Your email, blog, Flickr, Twitter, and Facebook accounts? It's not something you hear talked about very much, but there could be personal and historical value lost if those accounts die along with you. Our parents and grandparents passed down photos and letters to us, but what if all of those photos and letters are now on Flickr and in email? Evan Carroll covers this topic in his book Your Digital Afterlife: When Facebook, Flickr and Twitter Are Your Estate, What's Your Legacy?, and it's a fascinating read.

Contents:
Introducing the Digital Afterlife
Your Digital Life Death, and Beyond: The Shift to Digital; A Well-Lived (Digital) Life; The Artifacts of Your Life; The Value of Digital Things; What You Leave Behind; The Opportunity of Digital Legacy; Your Legacy at Risk; The Birth of an Industry
Securing Your Digital Legacy: Before You Begin; Computers and Devices; Email; Social Websites; Finance and Commerce; Create Your Plan
Epilogue: The Future of Digital Death
Appendix; Glossary; From the Authors; Index

Carroll start off by covering the evolution from physical pieces of our story and heritage to a more digital form. Especially dramatic is the comparison of communication from people who are serving during a time of war. Letters from the front-line are saved, re-read, age, and are part of an overall memory. Now you get emails that only exist in electronic form, and are quickly read, replied to, and saved in a mailbox. The immediacy and format of the message makes it more transitory, and less likely it will be handed down to future generations. This aging and patina that forms over the years is completely missing from the digital form. And while letters and pictures can be destroyed by flood and fire, a simple hard drive crash can wipe out a significant part of our digital past.

From there, Carroll lays out a detailed plan and format to both back up your digital life and to make sure that someone has the digital keys to handle your estate after your death. It's not quite as simple as you'd think, as web sites will often automatically shut down accounts once they are presented with proof of your death. On top of that, today's cutting edge storage mediums (like DVDs or solid state hard drives) may deteriorate over time, or the hardware to read those devices may become obsolete. Zip drives, floppy disk drives, laser disk readers... even VCR players are becoming ever more difficult to find. Move forward another decade, and the problem just gets bigger.

Yes, thinking about your online self and death may not be the most enjoyable thing to think about. You may not even care or think it's important. But your family (and their families) may feel different, and would like to know what "grampa" was like when they were alive...

Quintessential Resource for Estate Planning in the Digital Age
By Gwynne Murphy
Anyone considering making or in the process of creating a will in honor of Make a Will Month should get this book and explore the additional resources that Carroll and Romano have provided beyond their careful tour of your digital life. The authors take an honest and easily digestible look at the complex digital world. Not only do they examine the current situation of individuals amassing a constantly-growing collection of digital assets, but they simply it and walk you though ways to evaluate your options for the future. It's simple to recognize that we had no need to consider the preservation of our digital assets in the (not so distant) past. They didn't exist until recently, but in many cases, like digital photography, we want to be able to pass along these precious memories and records to the future generations - much in the same way you may have inherited the cherished family photo album. But what you may not realize, and what the authors illustrate, is that some of your digital assets are being archived and preserved whether you want them to be or not. Bottom line: Your Digital Afterlife is a must read for anyone with any sort of online element to their life. (And, yes, that includes personal email accounts and Facebook profiles.)

A very rare gift for making difficult things intelligible
By Mr. Charles R. Cowling
Where all assets were once physical, except for lingering memories, now they are increasingly digital. The most obvious examples are letters, documents, music and photos. There's more.

This book is full of thoughtful, intelligent insights."Will future generations have less attachment to physical objects?" What an interesting idea. Physical objects are unique, but "one of the unique features of digital things is that two exact copies can exist or one copy can be accessed in multiple places at one time." Had we only physical assets, they'd be divvied up, some thrown away, and our identity fragmented. Digital assets can be bequeathed complete - to more than just one person.

The law presently regards assets only as physical assets. How do we make sure these endure?

Your Digital Afterlife wants to persuade us of the necessity so, first, it makes the case. Our digital assets are identity-defining: "All this content forms a rich collection that reflects who you are and what you think." Much of this content may be interactive - comments on your Facebook status "reflecting on your identity"; your comments on others. Future generations will be able to see us as we saw ourselves and as others saw us.

So rich is this content that there's now "a huge opportunity that's never been available to ordinary people - a permanent archive of your life that could exist beyond your physical life." So great is the amount of our content that the authors call on us to curate it. With photos, for example, don't just leave 10,000 - no one will know where to start. Whittle them down, grade them and tag them.

This is all so new that "as a society we have not thought through the ramifications or considered what will happen to this digital content."

What's more, a great deal of this digital content does not reside in our devices (computer, phone, etc), it is stored by businesses which can deny others access - or go bust. What's more, most of these companies' terms of service do not make provision for our content on our death. They never thought of it. Here is a matter which needs urgently to be addressed: "Ideally services that host digital content would have an industry-standard or legally enforced way to deal with the death of their members." It will happen.

In the meantime, we need to appoint a digital executor with the technical nous to enable them to gather up and pass on our digital legacy - having, perhaps, got rid of specified content we'd rather others knew nothing of.

To enable our digital executor to do his or her work, we need to make an inventory of our devices and accounts - on a spreadsheet we can download from the YourDigitalAfterlife website. Meticulous instructions are given.

The book concludes with a speculative look into the future. Is it possible, the authors wonder, if, one day, artificial intelligence will become so sophisticated that it will be possible to process our store of digital content and create a humanoid robot in our own image?

Your Digital Afterlife is beautifully written - clear, jargon-free, accessible. Its tone is just right, too, companionable, not jokey and joshing nor loftily authoritative. It is both philosophical and practical. It has opened up a new and important field to me. As a UK writer and blogger on matters funereal (goodfuneralguide.co.uk) I shall be recommending this book with energy and conviction. It is superb.
