About the Author
Laurence A. Moran
After earning his Ph.D from Princeton University in 1974, Professor Moran spent four years at the Université dè Geneve in Switzerland. He has been a member of the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Toronto since 1978, specializing in molecular biology and molecular evolution. His research findings on heat-shock genes have been published in many scholarly journals.

H. Robert Horton
Dr. Horton, who received his Ph.D from the University of Missouri in 1962, is William Neal Reynolds Professor Emeritus and Alumni Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Biochemistry at North Carolina State University, where he served on the faculty for over 30 years. Most of Professor Horton’s research was in protein and enzyme mechanisms.

K. Gray Scrimgeour
Professor Scrimgeour received his doctorate from the University of Washington in 1961 and has been a faculty member at the University of Toronto since 1967. He is the author of The Chemistry and Control of Enzymatic Reactions (1977, Academic Press), and his work on enzymatic systems has been published in more than 50 professional journal articles during the past 40 years. From 1984—1992, he was editor of the journal Biochemistry and Cell Biology.

Marc D. Perry
After earning his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in 1988, Dr. Perry trained at the University of Colorado, where he studied sex determination in the nematode C. elegans. In 1994 he returned to the University of Toronto as a faculty member in the department of Molecular and Medical Genetics. His research has focused on developmental genetics, meiosis and bioinformatics. In 2004 he joined the Heart & Stroke / Richard Lewar Centre of Excellence in Cardiovascular Research in the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine.

Overly complicated and poorly edited

For a beginning biochemistry text they make simple concepts overly complicated and wordy. Important concepts are not easily taken out of the text and they often refer to information in chapters that are much later in the text. The problems are the end of each chapter are extremely confusing and require you to do a search and find to figure out what tables you should refer to since the problem often does not tell you where you will find the information. Sometimes when a problem does refer to a table you go to look for the table and realize that they were all renumbered in the revised edition (though they forgot to change the table references in the problems). There are also numerous spelling and grammatical errors. Nothing about this text is straight forward or easy to understand.

In all my science courses this is probably the worst book I have ever encountered and have resorted to using other sources for learning most concepts as this book does not explain things clearly.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK NEW ON AMAZON!!

The access code for the companion website www.chemplace.com was covered by a foil seal and when I tried to remove it, the sticker tore the first layer of the page off and completely obliterated any chance of seeing the access code. When I contacted Pearson they told me they would not support 3rd party vendors (Amazon). They would only help me if I had purchased directly through Pearson or the campus bookstore. Very very unhappy with the Pearson support line as well, she acted like she had never even heard of the online Chemplace website (I realize this is not Amazon's fault, but an important point in my opinion). Ridiculous to buy a brand new book and not be able to visit the companion website.

Stay away from this book

This is the worst textbook I have ever encountered.
There are many grammatical errors as well as errors in the material that are actually essential to your understanding of the subject (ex:equations, answers to end of chapter questions). It is excessively worded as well.
I actually bought a second textbook (Lehninger) in order to supplement this disgrace to the chemistry world. Unfortunately, my professor uses this book to write the exams so I still use it fairly often.

Also, the international (paperback) version is exactly the same in content to the hardcover.

Robert Clair has spent more than twenty years writing commercial graphics and CAD software. For the past eight years, he has specialized in Mac OS X and iPhone development. Excellent Primer for Programmers Wanting to Learn Obj-C

I can't tell you how much I appreciate it when a book doesn't waste your time, especially books on programming. "Learning" does a great job of mapping traditional C programming fundamentals to Objective-C OO abstractions. I come from a C/C++/Java/C#/AS3 background (primarily ECMA style), so some of the smalltalk'ish syntactical sugar Obj-C provides was rather foreign to me. However, all I needed was a simple explanation of the C fundamentals, the reason why Obj-C chose to abstract it (and the potential smalltalk/functional programming link) and how the compiler translates it down back to C again to clear them up. The whole [receiver message] paradigm was resolved within a few pages, and I had struggled with that concept for some time. These are the gems in this book. It flows well from topic to topic, isn't too long (finished in 2 days), and provides plenty of other resources to followup with for more advanced topics such as Cocoa Design Patterns. I would recommend some understanding of C and basic OO principles before reading this (or any Obj-C book for that matter) as that will help solidify the concepts found therein.

Beautiful Introduction to Objective-C and Mac/iOS Programming

I'm a physicist who has been programming in C (and other languages) for about 15 years now. I've read many programming books and can say that this one stands out as one of the most well-written. If you already have experience with procedural programming in C (or any other C-like language) and would like to learn object oriented programming with objective-c and some of the basic philosophy that goes along with it, than this is the perfect place to start.

The printing is very nice, I found no errors, the writing style is professional yet not dry, and the book's organization and flow are great.

Summary: if you already understand the principles of procedural programming with C and would like to learn the object-oriented extensions to the language furnished by objective-C in order to develop for the Mac/iOS platforms, then this is the book I recommend to you.

Good reference for objective C

I'm an experienced developer who is brand new to Objective C and macintosh & ios programming. In order to write apps for the ipad/iphone, you need to learn two things: Objective C, and Xcode/ios sdk. This book provides half of that puzzle. It gives the fundamentals of the objective C language and serves as a good reference afterwards. It's definitely the kind of book you will want on your shelf. I recommend it for experienced developers, but realize that merely reading this book will not provide you with enough to start writing apps.

About the Author

Thomas M. Smith, Associate Professor in Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia, received his Ph.D. in ecology from the University of Tennessee in 1982. The main focus of his research over the past two decades has been to develop an individual based theory of community and ecosystems dynamics. As part of this work he has served on numerous national and international panels that have addressed the potential influence of human activities on the global environment. He has authored over 70 publications based on his research, and he has been recognized as one of the most cited scientists in the field of global change research.

      Thomas’s work has taken him to over 70 countries and 6 continents. He has served on the faculty of the University of Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa), Australian National University (Canberra, Australia), as well as the University of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA, USA). In addition, he has held research scientist positions at both Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Oak Ridge, TN, USA) and the Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (Laxenburg, Austria). His has over 20 years of experience teaching the science of ecology to both science and non-science majors.

 

Robert L. Smith holds a Ph.D. in Wildlife Biology from Cornell University. He is Professor Emeritus of Ecology at West Virginia University. He has spent over 30 years teaching Ecology and conducting field research throughout the world.

His teaching responsibilities have involved mostly undergraduate courses in general ecology and graduate courses in population ecology and wildlife management. His research has included forest-fire related problems in southern West Virginia, vegetational development and succession on abandoned and reclaimed surface mines, the relation between forest vegetational structure and the forest bird community, and forest habitat assessment and habitat evaluation procedures based on vegetational structure.

Smith has served as a consultant to congressional committees, workshops on environmental education and energy and environmental problems, the National Landmarks program of the U.S. Department of Interior, National Research Council Task Forces on wildlife and fisheries issues and ecological classification systems for implementing environmental quality evaluation procedures.

Thorough and Timely Ecological Knowledge

Robert Leo Smith is one of the "Grand Gurus" of ecology textbook writers. I have been reading his textbooks since the early 1970's, most notably his flagship book "Ecology and Field Biology" which has gone through numerous editions, and which have been used in countless college courses throughout America. I have read them, taught with them, studied them, and often refer to them. They contain a huge amount of ecological knowledge, which forms the basis for many other ecologically oriented disciplines, such as forestry, agriculture, wildlife, and environmental science:(legions of natural resource professionals cut their "ecology" teeth with this text). This recent edition of "Elements of Ecology" once again shows the expertise of Robert Leo Smith and his collaborator, Thomas Smith. This iteration contains 29 chapters, divided into eight parts. The parts consist of the physical environment, the organism and its environment, populations, species interactions, community ecology, ecosystem ecology, and ecological biogeography. It definitely requires a college reading level and ability, but I would not hesitate to use it as a reference in high school and AP courses. It is well written, well illustrated, and has very good summaries at the end of each chapter, along with study questions. I know that there are several good textbooks on ecology out there; this one would be my "go to" text for teaching a one semester general ecology course. In addition, there is a useful website that one can access when you buy a book which has a serial number you must input. The website contains useful vocabulary reviews, study questions and practice quizzes.

A comprehensive treatment of biological complexity, yet excessively detailed.

This textbook was required for an ecology class I took over the summer of 2013. While I was not able to finish the entire book, I worked my way through just enough chapters to get a general impression of the quality of the writing and information. The authors are to be commended for doing an excellent job writing in a professional manner. Never did I sense unnecessary digressions or hurried explanations of ecological concepts. On the contrary, the authors patiently explain the complicated intricacies of ecology in such an efficient manner and in such detail that the writing can seem much too formal at times. The text is abounding with detail and while this strategy will no doubt appeal to many, the general principles can be difficult to keep track of when the text becomes overly bogged down with technicality. I have no doubt that the details were of crucial importance for a full, conceptual understanding of ecology, yet I could not help wondering if the same information could not be conveyed in a more pedagogical manner, an aspect where I think Cain's Ecology(another leading ecology textbook) has the advantage. This criticism is insignificant considering how well structured and organized the book is and although it is not perfect, I highly recommend it.

Excellent introduction to the field of ecological science

'Elements' is a very good introductory text for ecology students. Where it excels is in the breadth of material it covers and the admirable manner in which the authors lend necessary substance to each topic without bogging it down in ponderous detail. Students get a meaningful introduction to topics as varied as genetics and biogeography. The text is written in a clean, lucid style that neither condescends to students nor assumes that they're more advanced than they should be in their study of the subject matter. All around, this is a great pedagogical resource.

About the Author
Les Rowntree is a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, where he researches and writes about environmental issues. This career change comes after three decades of teaching both Geography and Environmental Studies at San Jose State University in California. As an environmental geographer, Dr. Rowntree’s interests focus on international environmental issues, biodiversity conservation, and human-caused global change. He sees world regional geography as a way to engage and inform students by giving them the conceptual tools needed to critically assess global issues. Dr. Rowntree has done research in Iceland, Alaska, Morocco, Mexico, Australia, and Europe, as well as in his native California. Current writing projects include a book on the natural history of California’s coast, as well as textbooks in geography and environmental science.

Martin Lewis is a Senior Lecturer in History at Stanford University. He has conducted extensive research on environmental geography in the Philippines and on the intellectual history of global geography. His publications include Wagering the Land: Ritual, Capital, and Environmental Degradation in the Cordillera of Northern Luzon, 1900–1986 (1992), and, with Karen Wigen, The Myth of Continents: A Critique of Metageography (1997). Dr. Lewis has traveled extensively in East, South, and Southeast Asia. His current research focuses on the geographical dimensions of globalization. In April 2009 Dr. Lewis was recognized by Time Magazine as a favorite lecturer.

Marie Price is a Professor of Geography and International Affairs at George Washington University. A Latin American specialist, Marie has conducted research in Belize, Mexico, Venezuela, Cuba, and Bolivia. She has also traveled widely throughout Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa. Her studies have explored human migration, natural resource use, environmental conservation, and regional development. She is a non-resident fellow of the Migration Policy Institute, a non-partisan think tank that focuses on immigration. Dr. Price brings to Globalization and Diversity a special interest in regions as dynamic spatial constructs that are shaped over time through both global and local forces. Her publications include the co-edited book Migrants to the Metropolis: The Rise of Immigrant Gateway Cities (2008, Syracuse University Press) and numerous academic articles and book chapters.

William Wyckoff is a geographer in the Department of Earth Sciences at Montana State University specializing in the cultural and historical geography of North America. He has written and co-edited several books on North American settlement geography, including The Developer’s Frontier: The Making of the Western New York Landscape (1988), The Mountainous West: Explorations in Historical Geography (1995) (with Lary M. Dilsaver), Creating Colorado: The Making of a Western American Landscape 1860–1940 (1999), and On the Road Again: Montana’s Changing Landscape (2006). In 2003 he received Montana State’s Cox Family Fund for Excellence Faculty Award for Teaching and Scholarship. Excellent overview of salient topics

I teach World Regional Geography at University, and have used many books in the past, but this is the one that I will be assigning from now on. The book goes into great depth on certain subjects that are incredibly important in today's world, while leaving out or only briefly touching on less relevant subjects that most books devote entire sections to.

An excellent textbook for an introductory geography class

This is an excellent textbook for an introductory geography class. The first chapter is a general introduction with an explanation of some of the terms and vocabulary used. The second chapter covers world physical geography. The rest of the chapters each covers a different region of the world. Each chapter is divided into five sections: environment, population and settlement, culture, geopolitics, and economic and social development. This book describes the details of the different regions of the world and gives us a good idea of what life is like in these different regions. And, it ties what we learn about the different regions to the overall theme of diversity and globalization. The accompanying maps and photographs are beautiful.

Actually enjoyed it

I must say after two college degrees, this is one of the best books I've had in any course. It was very informational and up to date with current topics of interest. I learned a lot about the world. The title seems boring, thought I would hate the class but nope, turned out to be one of my favorites simply because of this book. My only complaint is the price but that is typical of textbooks. This one actually has a reason to stay updated and current since it deals with the world in general including the environment, civil rights, economics, war, rebels, etc. If you have a course utilizing this book, consider yourself lucky that you are not taking a boring class!

About the Author
Karen Timberlake is professor emeritus of chemistry at Los Angeles Valley College, where she taught chemistry for allied health and preparatory chemistry for 36 years. She received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Washington and her Master’s degree in biochemistry from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Professor Timberlake has been writing chemistry textbooks for 30 years. During that time, her name has become associated with the strategic use of pedagogical tools that promote student success in chemistry and the application of chemistry to real-life situations. More than one million students have learned chemistry using texts, laboratory manuals, and study guides written by Karen Timberlake. In addition to Basic Chemistry, she is also the author of General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Structures of Life, Second Edition and Chemistry: An Introduction to General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Ninth Edition with the accompanying Study Guide with Solutions for Selected Problems, Laboratory Manual, and Essentials Laboratory Manual.

I rarely studied for this course and got a B+ (only because I suck at ORGO) at the end of the semester

Just tore out the pages I needed to hand in at the end of the semester. I rather pay ~$30 to make my life easier. If other students really want to save money, you can find printouts of each lab online. You just need to look very well.
Professor I had for basic chemistry class had no problem if you handed in a printout. The lab does have some information, but not enough to justify buying it to study. Everything that is in the manual, is in the textbook. With that information from textbooks, you should be able to deduce what is told to you in the lab manual without having to read it. I rarely studied for this course and got a B+ (only because I suck at ORGO) at the end of the semester.

Long ago (1995), four object-orientation specialists came out with a book called Design Patterns. In it, the four--whose book became so famous that they became known as the Gang of Four--forwarded a convincing argument that most programming jobs fell into a couple of dozen general categories, and that generic solutions to these programming problems--design patterns--could carry the day a lot of the time. The book remains part of the Holy Writ of object orientation, and indeed if you study it carefully you can save yourself from having to reinvent the wheel every time you set about writing software.

Not long ago (2003), Microsoft came out with a new programming language called C#. It's object oriented, and does lots of nifty stuff with networks. Design Patterns in C# shows you how to implement the 23 "Gang of Four" design patterns in this new language. Steven Metsker's approach is mostly architectural, with lots of object relationship diagrams and relatively little code. He says right up front: "This book is for developers who know C# and want to improve their skills as designers." Among the most valuable parts of his coverage are his comparisons of similar patterns. Works best in conjunction with GoF Design Patterns

This book reminds me of the 'Numerical Recipes in ' books. They were the thin adjunct books that accompanied Numerical Recipes which showed the examples implemented in various languages. The books were no good on their own, you needed Numerical Recipes to understand them. This book has the same problem. It doesn't introduce the patterns from scratch, it assumes that you have read the GoF book and that you can use it as the base source material.

That being said the author puts together, succinctly, with both diagrams and code, C# examples for all of the GoF design patterns. Even though in some cases there is very little code because the patterns have been integrated into the structure of the .NET framework.

I think this book is worth a look for anyone writing C# on a daily basis and who is a patterns fan. It's something you need to evaluate before you buy because, frankly, you may already know most of what you are going to see.

Could be much better

Steven knows what he's talking about. All patterns are nicely organized. I really liked chapter introductions and summaries because they were at times much clearer than chapter content itself. Small typos here and there didn't bother me that much. Overall, the book is proof-read quite well.

Cons

Each chapter presents a number of challenges, or quizzes. They appear intermittently with text and therefore distract you from the discussion each time because their solutions are listed in the back and you have to flip back and forth to follow code.

In a couple of places Steven throws a quiz at you and afterwards presents the subject at hand. Normally, you present material first and then quiz. Doing it the other way around is quite a strange educational technique.

Steven is an author of a number book on Java, and it shows in his C# code. Nothing wrong with Java per se, but c'mon! For example, he refers to the book Concurrent Programming in Java as an excellent resource when discussing multithreaded programming in .NET.

The singleton implementation found in this book is downright wrong! It may lead to deadlocks and is not thread-safe. You can find a more efficient implementation of a singleton with a double-check lock at Microsoft's Patterns and Practices.

Conclusion

The book *is* valuable. I didn't think it was a waste of money. Still, it fails to be the best book on the subject of Design Patterns in C# around.

Concise, Readable, and Specific

I really liked this book.

My background was in VB6 and classic ASP, until just over two years ago. I was introduced to C# and I've never looked back.
Reading about C# best practices led me into design patterns and that naturally led me to this book. It was the first book I've read on patterns (aside from a few articles online.)

Concise - Metsker doesn't waste my time with unnecessary text (such as lame jokes or repetitive text). If I don't get something the first time, I go back and read it over.

Readable - The information in the book is dense, and there are certainly sections that may be confusing initially. However the book thoughtfully organized, the spacing and layout are comfortable, the author's voice reminiscent of a friendly college professor

Specific - His implementation of patterns take advantage of C# specific features. This is important, and I would not have recognized this without the input of C++ developer.

In addition, this book helped to clarify a number of Object Oriented and Component Oriented concepts (such as delegates, interfaces, and iterators). Likewise, it shed light on the .NET FCL (streams and enumerators)

Regarding the exercises in the book; I was irritated with them at first, however I found that they were really useful for making the concepts stick once I quit being lazy. On the flipside, the book is quite useable even if you skip over them.

The only real negative is the metaphor of the fireworks company. It's not intuitive and it takes a while to sink in.

Interact With Web Standards - A Holistic Approach to Web Design

This recent discovery is authored by a group of web designers and usability architects in the industry from the US and Western Europe. The book is divided into three sections and starts off with a solid background into web design and its fundamentals. Part Two dives into planning and strategy, while Part Three gets down to the nitty gritty: implementation.

Readers will benefit from the overall perspective of the entire web process and what it takes to get content sourced and brought online. The book's sections on CSS and and coding will get a beginner programmer/web designer up to speed with laying out a site. This book will also aid companies in hiring a web team. Anyone with an interest in learning what goes on behind the scenes will benefit from this read. In addition, many useful web links are provided in the right spots to augment the reading experience while not getting too technical in any given area.

This is one guide that can also serve as a handy reference when talking through a project with clients. They too will benefit by reading the content strategy area, in order to learn how to best approach building a site for the first time - a daunting process for the uninitiated.

Well Worth a Read

I'm an individual who has a fairly decent sized personal library of web design and development books and I consider myself to have intermediate level skills in the area of web design. With these two things said, I give the highest level of praise to this book.

I don't have a personal connection to any of the authors of this publication but I feel fortunate to have met the book's Project Manager, Aarron Walter, at a 2010 web design conference. After our brief meeting, hearing his presentation at the conference, and now reading this work, I can tell you that this is a person who deeply cares about the education of future web professionals. And that caring shines through in the book. The multiple individuals who contributed chapters to this publication also show concern for web education as they guide readers through web design's best practices and standards with an easy and light-hearted style. I did not have any trouble adjusting to each individual author's approach to the various chapter topics. And I think it's also important to mention that this group of authors is donating 25% of their proceeds to the W3C's Open Web Education Alliance, a group formed to promote standards and best practice based education for web professionals.

More specifically, one of the really great things about this publication is that it includes "Try it yourself" sections, that offer exercises to practice the techniques you learn about in the book. There is also a companion website that provides code downloads for the HTML and CSS chapters. I found the Accessibility chapters particularly helpful. The final chapter provides a very good overview of all the topics presented in the book by guiding readers through the process of planning and building an entire website.

Other aspects of the book I found useful include the introduction to Internet fundamentals provided, coverage of the preparation and planning that goes into the development of websites (e.g., information architecture, content strategy), the various help areas highlighting tips and resources for more information, and the inclusion of HTML5 and CSS3 concepts in the appropriate chapters.

Overall, this is an easy-to-follow and well organized book. If you are looking for comprehensive coverage of standards-based design and development, this is the publication for you.

High Quality Book; content, writing, layout and actual book.

I teach a course on Web Application Development at the graduate school level. As a result I end up buying a dozen or more books in this topic area per semester. This book has moved to the top of my recommended list for experienced and new learners. The book does a great job of breaking down the real aspects of developing websites into meaningful topics, arranged them in a great manner and had real experts on those topics cover them. Let me emphasize the "REAL" aspects, there are a ton of other books that cover, say, PHP object oriented abstractions and other technical aspects of developing websites. This book does the best job of recognizing the reality, the human aspects, of the process and ongoing nature of developing a website. This is done with a high level of professionalism while keeping it real and engaging.

Students starting in on the topic will benefit from a great roadmap of best practices. "Seasoned" developers will benefit from the thoughtful review of best practices to add [back] to your business.
