About the Author
Robert Clair has spent more than twenty years writing commercial graphics and CAD software. For the past eight years, he has specialized in Mac OS X and iPhone development. As principal of Chromatic Bytes LLC, he has designed both OS X software (ZeusDraw and Shades) and iPhone programs (ZeusDraw Mobile and Orfeo). He has also consulted on a number of other iPhone and iPad applications.

Excellent Primer for Programmers Wanting to Learn Obj-C

I can't tell you how much I appreciate it when a book doesn't waste your time, especially books on programming. "Learning" does a great job of mapping traditional C programming fundamentals to Objective-C OO abstractions. I come from a C/C++/Java/C#/AS3 background (primarily ECMA style), so some of the smalltalk'ish syntactical sugar Obj-C provides was rather foreign to me. However, all I needed was a simple explanation of the C fundamentals, the reason why Obj-C chose to abstract it (and the potential smalltalk/functional programming link) and how the compiler translates it down back to C again to clear them up. The whole [receiver message] paradigm was resolved within a few pages, and I had struggled with that concept for some time. These are the gems in this book. It flows well from topic to topic, isn't too long (finished in 2 days), and provides plenty of other resources to followup with for more advanced topics such as Cocoa Design Patterns. I would recommend some understanding of C and basic OO principles before reading this (or any Obj-C book for that matter) as that will help solidify the concepts found therein.

Beautiful Introduction to Objective-C and Mac/iOS Programming

I'm a physicist who has been programming in C (and other languages) for about 15 years now. I've read many programming books and can say that this one stands out as one of the most well-written. If you already have experience with procedural programming in C (or any other C-like language) and would like to learn object oriented programming with objective-c and some of the basic philosophy that goes along with it, than this is the perfect place to start.
The printing is very nice, I found no errors, the writing style is professional yet not dry, and the book's organization and flow are great.
Summary: if you already understand the principles of procedural programming with C and would like to learn the object-oriented extensions to the language furnished by objective-C in order to develop for the Mac/iOS platforms, then this is the book I recommend to you.

Good reference for objective C

I'm an experienced developer who is brand new to Objective C and macintosh & ios programming. In order to write apps for the ipad/iphone, you need to learn two things: Objective C, and Xcode/ios sdk. This book provides half of that puzzle. It gives the fundamentals of the objective C language and serves as a good reference afterwards. It's definitely the kind of book you will want on your shelf. I recommend it for experienced developers, but realize that merely reading this book will not provide you with enough to start writing apps.
