Well writen,useful and informative
By Barbara Mallon
As a Livermore Valley Camera Club member for 40 years, I have watched a lot of ideas evolve from image-capture to print. This book, Real World Digital Photography, covers the latest ideas one should know in choosing equipment, optimizing the image exposure, uploading the image to the computer, using processing software, and printing and or sharing the image. I also heard Tim Grey speak recently and was pleased to see this book with him as one of the authors. One of the things that makes a photography how-to book useful is the author's ability to convey complex ideas simply and understandably. In other words, it does not matter how good you are if you cannot tell your story well. These authors are excellent writers!
The first part of the book is a discussion on choosing a digital camera and the tradeoffs of point and shoot cameras to full-fledged SLRs. This part of the book is for beginners as well as more advanced photographers. It is definitely a handbook. The authors ably illustrate the differences in sensor size, ISO, noise, file formats, resolution, tripods, batteries and card readers. The table of contents says it all. (There is also a great index!) They talk about getting the exposure right. The appearance of the histogram is an important tool in getting the proper exposure. After all, photography is all about light. Light has color and one can correct it with white balance. Composition is discussed as well. And there is much, much more!
Then the authors change course and the book becomes more of a discussion directed at the more experienced photographers. Panoramas may be of interest to beginners but HDR is probably not.
The discussion on choosing a computer, storage of images and editing software, and printers becomes more complex. The authors choose Lightroom as the editing tool of choice. Before I proceed, I should state that I do not use Lightroom, I use PhotoShop, Bridge and Adobe Camera Raw. (And in his lecture, Tim Grey said he also uses that software not Lightroom in contrast to what they state in the book.) I thought the book would convince me that I should buy Lightroom. I already have a file organization system so that very useful function to some would not appeal to me. The authors tell the reader what can be done with lightroom but I did not think the discussion was comprehensive enough to call it a handbook. After reading the rest of the book, I concluded that I've already written actions to do what I want in PhotoShop. Lightroom is a different way of doing many of the same things with less effort. There are a few things that cannot be done easily in PhotoShop but are easily accomplished in Lightroom. But making alterations in small areas of the photo takes PhotoShop. The two programs are philosophically different.
The Book describes the process of sending a photo to your printer describing all the settings one would need to adjust. There are some settings that are counter intuitive such as turning off color management if you are selecting PhotoShop to manage the colors. This section is very well done. Next, the authors describe adjusting your photo to send as an email and making a web photo gallery. Finally, they discuss protecting your online photos from unauthorized use. Those who wish to put their images on the web will learn how to get them there.
I would recommend this book highly for understanding digital cameras, how they work and trade-offs in choices. There are good discussions on light, composition and flash photography. It will give those considering purchasing Lightroom an idea of the capability of the program. Finally, the book suggests how best to print your images and to protect them from theft.

The digital photographer's "bible"
By Bruce Philpott
Katrin Eismann has long been my Photoshop retouching diva. For this book, she is joined by two other well known photographer/educators as they break down nearly everything about digital photography into very understandable segments. It's amazing how well they've explained and illustrated such a breadth of material, and you don't have to be a technician to understand it. They begin with the photographer's hopes and expectations and explain the steps necessary to achieve those expectations from beginning camera operation through digital image enhancement. Take a look at the table of contents("Click to look inside") and you'll see this book is a modern "bible" of photography. As a photography/Photoshop educator myself, I'm really impressed with what a great job they've done here.

The Perfect Start to Digital Photography
By Alex Hawk
Real World Digital Photography is a big undertaking amassing to about 600 pages. I've read a lot of photography books and all of them cover the basic Aperture, Shutter, ISO. What's great about this book though is that it covers almost everything else. It talks in detail about camera sensors, monitor and printer calibration, and why to choose certain types of gear. You won't find many books that have this much information all in one place.
If I was starting out in digital photography a second time, this book would be my go-to reference. Eismann leaves no stone unturned and introduces the beginner to almost every aspect involved with digital photography from the capture all the way through to the print. Every topic that is discussed in this book is worth discussing and the authors go into a reasonable amount of depth for each of them. If I had to pick just one digital photography book to have in my collection, this would be it.
