Get the first edition.

I have just bought this brand new 3rd edition and compared it with my 1st edition. They are almost exactly the same, even down to the page numbers. This is an old scam by textbook publishers, but usually they will at least change around the table of contents and put in new diagrams, photos and tables. Not so with this title.
And if the 1st and 3rd editions are almost exact copies, then I'm sure the 2nd edition would be fine too.
Also, do not think that you need to buy the "Custom Edition" for your school, it's just the campus bookstore's and publisher's way of keeping you off Amazon and charging you double for an already overpriced book.

Some answers in the back are wrong

This text book plus an awesome professor have made me stop fearing chemistry. It gives relatable examples like comparing stoichiometry to baking a pizza. Unfortunately some answers in the back are incorrect. They updated a lot of tables and refrences with more accurate significant digits, but just transferred the answers from the last volume for which the calculations had used different numbers.

More cumbersome than the hardback variant

I chose to purchase this looseleaf chemistry book because it was slightly cheaper that the hardback option from my university's bookstore. While all the content is there, this book is a larger hassle than its hardback version. The pages, at first, are very difficult to get into the three ring binder required to keep this book together. I also found that at times the pages of this book would tear from the binder and needed to be taped back together. Overall, if money isn't an issue Just go with the hardback variant, it's smaller and easier to manage. If you do need to save a few bucks go with an older edition. I have several friends who did and made it through the class with an A.
