Good Stories - Great Pictures - Awful Publishing

When Moose announced this book, I preordered it immediately. He's a great story teller. If you ever have the chance to hear him speak, do. His pictures are also amazing at telling stories as well. This book is a very nice read too, sprinkled with many different great stories.
It's definitely not an f/stop and shutter speed book. It's part photography, part life, and part nature. Which is what Moose is about. He'd rather help a biologist than sell a print.
However, my issue with this book lies in the publishing. This almost could be a coffee table book with these great images. Instead, these great images, some of which I have seen before, are very dissapointing. The book is published on a very flat paper, and in many cases the pictures are either very dark or washed out.
I'm hoping they fix this in a subsequent printings. But, for a $50 book, I expected better quality than this.

Disappointed

I was one who was excited to see this book come out. I preordered it as soon as I saw it mentioned on Scott Kelby's blog.
Then it arrived. First, the good news. The stories are good and many of the photos are very nice. Now the bad news: I was very disappointed in the way the pictures are printed in this book. They are flat and not very appealing. Very different than (for instance) Joe McNally's books published by (I think) the same folks. In those, the photos shine - but not here. This is not the fault of the original images, but of the printing approach. As another reviewer mentioned, this should not be the case on a book this expensive.
I was also disappointed in the number of technical errors in the text. These may simply be oversights on the part of the author, but should definitely have been caught by a competent editor. For instance, there are three obvious errors about flash on one page spread (pages 206 and 207). For instance, the text says that "with front-curtain sync...the flash fires when the first shutter blade starts to move." This is, of course, incorrect (as it would result in the flash firing before the shutter blades clear the light path). Even worse is the description of rear-curtain sync which states that, "the flash fires when the last shutter blade finishes its travel." Of course, this would result in the flash firing after the shutter was closed, and no flash lighting would reach the sensor.
Similarly, on the facing page, in describing what happens when ambient lighting exceeds the maximum shutter sync speed of 1/250 of a second, "the camera will say HI. When you see HI rather than a shutter speed displayed , the ambient light exposure will be underexposed." Of course, it should have said overexposed.
Now, I am not trying to nitpick on specific technical issues, but the number that show up in this book is pretty remarkable, and get in the way of the important content of the book. As mentioned, these should have been caught in the editorial process. I don't think that "Voices that Matter" did themselves very proud with this publication.

Inspirational & Fun

CAPTURED by Moose Peterson is a fantastic read. I found it not only fun to read but hard to put down for very long. Through his story telling ability, Moose tells the reader not only how but why he has taken such great images. This is not a book full of confusing technical jargon but it's full of practical information and tips to help us all to become better photographers. I've already changed some of my habits as a result of reading it. Of course the images are fantastic as well. This book will definitely be on my coffee table for others to enjoy.
