The Photoshop Elements 9 Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter), by Scott Kelby, Matt Kloskowski

This book breaks new ground by doing something for digital photographers that’s never been done before—it cuts through the bull and shows you exactly “how to do it.” It’s not a bunch of theory; it doesn’t challenge you to come up with your own settings or figure things out on your own. Instead, it does something that virtually no other Elements book has ever done—it tells you flat-out which settings to use, when to use them, and why.

If you’re looking for one of those “tell-me-everything-about-the-Unsharp-Mask-filter” books, this isn’t it. You can grab any other Elements book on the shelf, because they all do that. Instead, this book gives you the inside tips and tricks of the trade for organizing, correcting, editing, sharpening, retouching, and printing your photos like a pro. You’ll be absolutely amazed at how easy and effective these techniques are—once you know the secrets.

LEARN HOW THE PROS DO IT
Each year we train thousands of digital photographers and, almost without exception, they have the same questions and face the same problem—that’s  exactly what we cover in this book. You’ll learn:

  • The real secrets of how the pros retouch portraits
  • How to color correct any photo with out breaking a sweat (you’ll be amazed at how they do it!)
  • How to use Camera Raw for processing not only RAW photos, but JPEGs and TIFFs, too! (And you’ll learn why so many pros like it best—because it’s faster and easier)
  • The sharpening techniques the pros really use (there’s an entire chapter just on this!)
  • How to deal with common digital camera image problems, including removing noise and avoiding halos
  • The most requested photographic special effects, and much more!
THE BOOK’S SECRET WEAPON
Although Elements 9 offers some digital photography features that Photoshop CS5 doesn’t offer, there are plenty of features that Photoshop CS5 has that Elements 9 still doesn’t have (things like paths, Channel Mixer, etc.). But in this book, you’ll learn some slick workarounds, cheats, and some fairly ingenious ways to replicate many of those Photoshop features from right within Elements. Plus, since this book is designed for photographers, it doesn’t waste your time talking about how to frame a shot, set your exposure, etc., and there’s no talk about which camera or printer to buy. It’s all Elements, step-by-step, cover-to-cover, in the only book of its  kind!

Not for Beginners
By Molly McGee
Although there is a hint of a warning in the book's description, I think it's important to emphasize that this is not a beginner's book. The authors assume you know about how "layers" and other key aspects of Elements work. I was lost when it came to the editing portions of the book.

Great asset for newer PS users.
By P. Mullin
So if you are like me you do not use PS everyday. This book makes it easy to find the steps needed to tweak your photos. It gives you step by step instructions on how to make photo adjustments. I don't want to spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to sharpen the picture or adjust eh white balance. I love the way the book just walks you through the steps.

The author has an odd sense of humor that comes out in his chapter intros but I don't hold it against him.

Very Useful for Me
By E. Turner
Reading the other reviews, the difference between the reviewers who like it - and the ones who don't - seems to be the experience level. So, I'll explain my experience first.

This is the first book I've ever bought about using Elements. I researched to try to find one at the right level for me. All I know about Elements is self-taught in the past 2.5 years, reading online tutorials, and participating in a local digital photography club. I don't necessarily know the right terms, but I've figured out how to do most basic things. (I even discovered reading this book that I'd discovered some better techniques than they taught!) But, I was at the stage where I was frustrated. I know I have a good eye for composition. I know that I have some good pictures, well-composed, well-focused, and with sufficient resolution to turn out very high quality pictures. I've won some local contests. But, I couldn't get my pictures to have that final polish and pizazz I see in the national contest winners, the sample photos with the Microsoft programs, etc. So, I got this book.

I am thrilled with this book for me. A lot of it was familiar to me, but it also taught me tricks to make my photographs look better - give them the extra I was looking for through Elements. Also, it has made processing my digital pictures quicker by teaching me some short-cuts that I had never discovered.

There is a bit of fluff intro for each chapter - but the author warns you in the intro about that and suggests you skip them if you are the serious sort. The book doesn't have to be read in order. It can be used as a desk reference. Good table of contents and good index. I read it cover to cover, trying out everything new to me, the first weekend I had it. Now I'm using it as a desk reference.

If you are a total newby, this might not be for you - although I found the screen shots in the book sufficient to get me to the Element controls I didn't know existed. And I'm "untaught" enough that I started this book not understanding masks and barely understanding layers - I was just using them without realizing that was what I was doing. However, you don't have to be an expert to use it. In fact, it may be repetitive if you are. Even at my level, I just skimmed through a couple of chapters and found nothing new. It is a good reference on basic techniques you may not use every day, with a few extra tricks thrown in the last chapters. It is good for someone like me who has figured out the basics, but is at the stage of needing to understand the Elements program better in order to improve my photographs.
