About the Author
Hugh D. Young is Professor of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. He attended Carnegie Mellon for both undergraduate and graduate study and earned his Ph.D. in fundamental particle theory under the direction of the late Richard Cutkosky. He joined the faculty of Carnegie Mellon in 1956, and has also spent two years as a visiting Professor at the University of California at Berkeley. Hugh's career has centered entirely around undergraduate education. He has written several undergraduate-level textbooks, and in 1973 he became a coauthor with Francis Sears and Mark Zemansky for their well-known introductory texts. In addition to his role on Sears and Zemansky's "College Physics," he is currently a coauthor with Roger Freedman on Sears and Zemanksy's "University Physics,"
Hugh is an enthusiastic skier, climber, and hiker. He also served for several years as Associate Organist at St. Paul's Cathedral in Pittsburgh, and has played numerous organ recitals in the Pittsburgh area. Prof. Young and his wife Alice usually travel extensively in the summer, especially in Europe and in the desert canyon country of southern Utah.
Robert M. Geller teaches physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he also obtained his Ph.D. under Robert Antonucci in observational cosmology. Currently, he is involved in two major research projects: a search for cosmological halos predicted by the Big Bang, and a search for the flares that are predicted to occur when a supermassive black hole consumes a star.
Rob also has a strong focus on undergraduate education. In 2003, he received the Distinguished Teaching Award. He trains the graduate student teaching assistants onmethods of physics education. He is also a frequent faculty leader for the UCSB Physics Circus, in which student volunteers perform exciting and thought-provoking physics demonstrations to elementary schools.
Rob loves the outdoors. He and his wife Susanne enjoy backpacking along rivers and fly fishing, usually with rods she has build and flies she has tied. Their daughter Zoe loves fishing too, but her fish tend to be plastic, and float in the bathtub.

A Bad Value For a Broken Product

Mastering Physics is a terrible program for teaching students physics. Putting aside that this is asking students to pay money outside of tuition and textbooks( an already unethical gambit), Mastering Physics tends to air on the side of faulty with most of it's design. For example, if an incorrect answer is given three times in a row the question is marked wrong and the student is disincentivized from any further attempt at the problem. Hints are provided on maybe a quarter of the problem, but points are even taken away from incorrect answers in the 'Hint' questions. This would all be forgivable if the software gave some feedback as to why the problem was incorrect or maybe even just provide method to solving the problem, but no, it doesn't do this in the slightest. For 60$ this is a terrible product with little value and I would discourage any university from using it.
If your a professor and are reading this now please, give your students weekly collaborative homeworks that are easy to grade and avoid this unprofessional and greuling piece of work.

Though the interface is clunky and fickle it's quite useful and a great study guide

This is usually complimented along with College Physics with MasteringPhysics, Volume 1 (7th Edition) TEXTBOOK.
Though the interface is clunky and fickle it's quite useful and a great study guide, yet it certainly needs improvement. It's a given that points will be taken away for incorrect answers just like any other assignment, besides the professor has full control over the point system and if you disagree with an answer or work (proven) done, he/she may adjust the grading. Most of the time it could be a rounding issue, as in my case... because the Pearson books have engineering / scientific notations all wrong and it also reflects within the software, especially when it comes to LONG and complicated Physics problems... so ASK your Professor!
The prices for the product are overstretching the entire point of educating students, let alone education itself... quality education and study materials ought to be free. **You Business and Capitalistic bozos can go live on your tiny garbage infested island... Real, intelligent, people who want to learn and provide a prosperous community world-wide know it's about the breadth of quality education and knowledge.is superior than the depth of your pockets. I previously noted the site needs improvement, besides the notation and many others.. is that Pearson ought to provide access to the software and material throughout the customers lifetime. We pay good money for this!
As with the post "A Bad Value For a Broken Product" ... I think you need to study prior to actually publishing your answers! It's NOT a cheat system to get good grades. You have to work at it!
