About the Author
Travis Hudson is an applied and research geologist with 40 years of diverse experience studying Earth and its relation to people. While completing graduate school at Stanford University, his career began as a research geologist with the U. S. Geological Survey in Alaska. Study of the origin, emplacement, and crystallization of granitic magmas naturally led to studies of related mineral deposits. Rock, soil, and stream sediment geochemistry, integral parts of these studies, helped to understand igneous processes and the natural distribution of elements in surficial environments. Alaska, being such a wonderful laboratory for active tectonic processes, enabled him to study active faulting and coastal deformation as part of state-wide investigations of earthquake hazards.
Hudson's regional understanding of Alaska was put to the test when he became a mineral explorationist for a private company. As is common in the private sector, his responsibilities changed and to his surprise he became a research director for an oil company where he studied regional tectonics and basin evolution. He finished his oil patch stint as an exploration manager on Alaska’s North Slope where he helped discover a few oil fields. His company had inherited significant environmental problems from its mining division so environmental remediation technology became the next focus; low temperature water-rock reactions, groundwater, and surface water processes were important in these efforts. While managing environmental cleanups at mining-related sites, he interacted with regulators, became knowledgeable of environmental regulations and standards, and took on many community education responsibilities. He has been a consulting geologist and the Director of Environmental Affairs for the American Geological Institute (AGI) since 1996. He is the author of many scientific contributions including the AGI Environmental Awareness Series book, Metal Mining and the Environment.
